Fascism defined and the similarities to Trumpism.
What key factors represent a fascist administration?
Cult of Action and Rejection of Modernity:
A distrust of intellectualism, complex systems, and traditional democratic norms in favor of direct, decisive action.
Fixation on National Decline and Victimhood:
Framing the nation as under siege by internal and external enemies who are corrupting its identity.
Scapegoating and In-Group vs. Out-Group Dynamics: Defining national identity through exclusion, portraying minorities, immigrants, or political opponents as existential threats.
Cult of Personality: Unquestioning loyalty to a single strongman figure who claims to uniquely represent the true will of the people.
Contempt for Democratic Institutions:
Undermining free press, independent courts, and electoral integrity, often viewing constitutional constraints as obstacles to national greatness.
Glorification of Political Violence:
Framing political struggle as zero-sum combat where rhetoric or physical force against opponents is justified.
Points of Similarity with the Trump Movement and Administration:
1. Rhetoric of National Rebirth and Decline:
Trump’s foundational slogan, "Make America Great Again," fits the classic palingenetic framework: asserting that a once-great nation has fallen into ruin due to corrupt elites, foreign competitors, and cultural decay, and that only he can restore it. His speeches often depict American cities as crime-ridden and institutions as fundamentally broken.
2. Cult of Personality and Anti-Institutionalism:
A defining characteristic of the Trump movement is the central role of personal loyalty to Trump above traditional party platforms or democratic norms. Trump has frequently challenged the legitimacy of independent checks on executive power, including the judiciary, intelligence agencies, the Department of Justice, and mainstream media outlets (which he famously labeled the "enemy of the people").
3. Scapegoating and Dehumanizing Language:
Fascist movements rely heavily on creating clear "in-groups" (the authentic public) and "out-groups" (foreigners, minorities, political dissidents). Critics highlight Trump's use of language regarding immigrants (e.g., describing undocumented immigrants as "poisoning the blood of our country") and political opponents (describing them as "vermin" or the "enemy from within") as echoing historic fascist rhetoric designed to strip opponents of political legitimacy.
4. Challenges to Democratic Elections and Toleration of Violence:
The events surrounding the 2020 election—specifically false claims of systemic fraud, efforts to overturn certified election results, and the January 6 Capitol attack—are cited by historians as the clearest structural parallel to authoritarian tactics. Scholars point to Trump’s rhetoric excusing or praising individuals involved in political violence as breaking with modern democratic traditions.
Though Trumpism doesn't check every box to be considered a fascist regime it's similarities are undeniable. Without a doubt, he and his Administration has taken large steps towards such a state. If left unchecked, the harm that will be done to our nation will increase exponentially. So, let's make sure in November we get out there and vote to prevent the advancement of a fascist nation and the further decay of our Democracy. The future for your children and grandchildren is in your hands my friends, let's not muck it up.
