UH Dance Welcomes Laura Gutierrez to our Friday Master Class series!
About the Artist:
Laura Gutierrez is a dancer, choreographer, and teaching artist from Houston, TX. A graduate of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, she received a BFA in Contemporary Dance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where she was awarded a William R. Kenan, Jr., Performing Arts Fellowship at Lincoln Center Education. Gutierrez has performed at the Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, BAM Next Wave Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Dance, Brisbane Festival, and in museums such as The Menil Collection, Contemporary Arts Museum–Houston, the Fabric Workshop Museum, DiverseWorks, Museo Jumex (CDMX) and The Guggenheim -Works in Process. Her choreography has been seen at Lincoln Center’s Clark Studio Theatre, CPR- Center for Performance Research, Dixon Place, Judson Church, Triskelion Arts, Sicardi Gallery, MATCH Houston, and CounterCurrent Festival. She performed works by Joan Jonas, Tino Sehgal, Jane Weiner, Rosie Trump, Frame Dance, Helen Simoneau, and Jonah Bokaer Choreography, and has been named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch.”

UH Dance Master Class Series welcomes Jesus Acosta this Friday, October 11, 2024!
About the Artist:
Jesus Acosta is originally from Guanajuato, Mexico. He began dancing at eighteen at Sam Houston State University, where he attended school to receive a BFA in Dance. He danced professionally with METdance Company and Hope Stone Dance Company both for four seasons, he is a founding member of NobleMotion Dance, where he danced for nine seasons, and for Houston Contemporary Dance Company, where he danced for three seasons.
Jesus has worked for MA Dance and Auxiliaries for nineteen years, teaching, choreographing, and judging all over the United States. Jesus has also choreographed for The Houston Texans Cheerleaders and has been featured in Dance Teacher Magazine. Acosta has been a judge on the Contemporary/Lyrical Panel at The Dance Worlds for the past four years. In his professional career, he danced nationally in venues such as The Ailey Theater in New York City, The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., The Paramount Theater in Boston, Massachusetts, The McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California, and The Rose Wagner Performing Arts Complex in Salt Lake City, among others. Now that he has retired from professional dancing, he can be found teaching at various dance studios in Houston and the surrounding areas. He loves instilling positivity and inspiring young minds to fulfill their potential as artists and humans.

Thank you to the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts Convergence Research for presenting "Testimony: Seen and Heard" a new collaboration by Professor Toni Leago Valle, UH Moores alum George Heathco, and UH Visual Art student, Shelby Craze.
"Testimony: Seen and Heard" premiered as part of Convergence Research, a platform for interdisciplinary inquiry supported by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and the Blaffer Art Museum. The performance was held in the Louise J. Moran Fine Arts Courtyard at the University of Houston’s main campus on September 18, 2024.
"Testimony: Seen and Heard" is an artistic response to the sculpture “Witness” by artist Shahzia Sikander that explores the theme of justice and traditional representations of power.

UH Dance welcomes Yoel Marrero to our Friday Dance Master Class Series on October 4th!
About the Artist:
Yoel Marrero is a Dance Instructor, Choreographer, and Professional dancer. Born in Camaguey, Cuba, Yoel trained as a professional dancer at the Superior Institute de Arte in the Latin American House of Culture and with the Conjunto Artistic Maraguan. He gained international recognition with the ensemble as a principal dancer and choreographer and continues to collaborate as a technical consultant for the Artistic Ensemble Maraguan of the University of Camagüey. In 2006, he joined the company Cuba Haiti, touring and perfuming throughout Cuba until he founded his own company and dance school, Salsa Underground, based in Trinidad, Cuba. Yoel has been instrumental in promoting the arts and serving as an ambassador of Cuban culture, performing and teaching throughout Europe and Mexico. He founded two annual festivals, Bailes Y Arts, and, in 2009 and 2016, that bring students from Europe and the USA for advanced training in the arts, particularly Afro-Cuban dance, music, and studies.
Salsa Underground, his dance company and school based in Trinidad, Cuba, provides full-time employment, training, and professional development for dancers with little to no prior formal instruction. As a community project, Salsa Underground has successfully trained “street dancers” who have led careers as professional dancers and choreographers.
