In this workshop, we’ll paint digitally, using just a few layers & blend modes to create a painting that’s bursting with color! We’ll sketch from a reference and do most of the painting on a single layer. Then, we’ll add details & work with some basic blend modes. It’s helpful to have experience with drawing/painting, but different skill levels are welcome.

We’re halfway through our 7-week alla prima portrait journey, and this week was all about pushing limits.

challenged students to complete a full portrait in one sitting using only the Zorn palette (black, white, yellow ochre, and cad red). With just four colors, they explored how to capture lifelike skin tones, depth, and mood, while working quickly and decisively.

This exercise isn’t just about technique, it’s about trusting your instincts, embracing bold brushstrokes, and discovering how much can be expressed with simplicity. The results? Powerful portraits filled with energy and personality.

Marnie Shick, ,is a Savannah College of Art & Design Animation graduate and a resident artist at Jersey House Studio, a Houston-based collective known for its experimental, collaborative projects. At , she’s worked on concept art, character designs, storyboards, graphics, voice acting, and more—pushing boundaries across both traditional and digital media.

Her art combines quirky, experimental storytelling with bold, colorful design. From vibrant 2D paintings to imaginative 3D worlds and playful character designs, Marnie brings stories to life across mediums.

Starting August 16th, join artist Peter Broz at Forgn Studio inside the Houston Maker Hub for a 7-week portrait painting course using the alla prima (direct painting) method. This efficient, single-layer technique skips underpainting and glazing, focusing on confident, direct color application.
