The College of Arts and Humanities at Houston Christian University is pleased to announce the opening of Under the Fig Tree, a solo exhibition by Houston-based artist Callan Summers.

Artist Statement:
All of my work hinges on the common element of naturalistically depicted people. In these portraits and figures, I aim to confront the essence and condition of the human soul in addition to capturing physical likeness. This presentation of the soul is achieved by provoking emotion through a blend of traditional naturalism and modern expression. The emotive quality in the figures is then echoed in their setting. By placing my characters in equally evocative landscapes, I can use this harmony between figure and setting to highlight the strong connection between nature and humanity, particularly when it comes to spiritual and mental well-being. As a partner to this theme, I typically incorporate references to Christian Scripture, fairy tales, and mythology. This serves the double purpose of communicating multiple layers of meaning (through an established symbolic language) and of transporting viewers beyond the humdrum into a world with eternal significance.

Artist Bio:
Mrs. Callan Summers got her start in art at an early age, completing her first commissioned portraits at age fourteen and illustrating her first children’s book at eighteen. Since then, she has gone on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and an MFA in painting from her alma mater, Houston Christian University, while working freelance as a portraitist and illustrator. Today she serves full-time as a teacher and continues to make art in her precious moments of free time. What a joy it is to share truth and encourage creativity in growing young minds!

The College of Arts and Humanities at Houston Christian University is pleased to announce the opening
of Antes y Despues, a solo artist exhibition by Houston-based artist Stephanie Gonzalez.

Antes y Despues is an exhibition where the unconscious and conscious minds collide.

Antes represents a collection of works created during the artist's MFA candidacy at Houston Christian University. It was in graduate school where she was introduced to a world of possibility through mentorship and artist techniques. These artworks were born from a need to express and release personal emotions through intuition, mark-making, sewing and textiles, and distressing of material.

Despues marks a shift in the artist's work, beginning in 2020 after a shift in the artist's perception of reality. Moving away from abstract expression, Ms. Gonzalez embraced a controlled approach to her artistic process. Born from isolation and self-reflection, these new artworks explore space and time, alternate dimensions, and the nature of reality. Vivid colors challenge conventional landscapes, while serene skies and geometric shapes symbolize spirit and self.

Gallery 220 in the College of Arts and Humanities at Houston Christian University is pleased to announce the opening reception and exhibition for A Pilgrimage Into The Oculus, with artist Motoko Yasue.

MOTOKO YASUE is a Houston-based artist born in Tokyo, Japan. Her main media are watercolor and oil. She graduated with an MFA at Houston Christian University in 2021. She serves as an artist in Residence at Art Museum TX.

Artist Statement:

Nature and its beauty fuel the strength of my artistic vision, which is all about seeking to express my deepest senses and feelings about life. Life includes adversity; nature helps me face difficult situations.
Through trial and error as an artist, I have explored scenes that came to mind when I was confronted with emotions of my life decisions. When my sensations connect with nature, my mind transcends beyond time and space, as if in a dream, as if my thoughts were traveling between the past, the present, and the future.

My artworks are an abstract visions of scenes from my dreams and childhood memories of my father that include looking through the circular window, described as an ‘oculus’, of a religious shrine to the surrounding tranquil scenery. I have long used circular motifs juxtaposed with small human silhouettes. For me, the oculus symbolizes my spirit traveling, metaphorically connecting people’s thoughts from one person to another across time and space.
