The Harris School

The Harris School In 1997, a group of dedicated child psychiatrists in Houston recognized a crucial need for a quality early-intervention program for children.

The Harris School provides specialized therapeutic education for
elementary school children facing social and emotional difficulties, empowering children and families with skills to overcome challenging behaviors and achieve academic success. United by a vision to support young minds, they founded The Harris School (THS), named in honor of Dr. Hunter Harris, a pioneering physician in children's me

ntal health. For over two decades, THS has been a safe place for elementary school children, offering a unique blend of behavioral, emotional, and academic support. The school’s holistic approach ensures that each child’s individual needs are met with empathy and expertise, empowering them to thrive. The Harris School continues to stand as a testament to the vision of its founders, providing a nurturing environment where children flourish and families find hope.

🧠 This week in Social Skills Groups, we learned about our brains!

Each week, our Family Consultants lead small groups where students build a better understanding of themselves, their emotions, relationships, and the skills that help them navigate their day.

This week, students explored how the brain works and began making connections between what happens in our brains and what we feel, think, and do.

Because when children understand what’s happening inside their brains, they’re better equipped to understand themselves. 💚

WE’RE BACK. 💚🦔

There aren’t many first-day photos in our camera roll this year.

The past six weeks have been a whirlwind. Since the fire on July 1st, our school has been filled with contractors, remediation crews, engineers, inspectors, electricians, HVAC teams, cleaning crews… and a whole lot of people determined to get The Harris School ready for our students.

There have been permits, repairs, soot testing, ceilings removed and replaced, classrooms packed up and put back together, plenty of unexpected hurdles, and more late nights than we can count.

Through all of it, our staff kept showing up. They rebuilt classrooms, moved furniture, unpacked boxes, cleaned, organized, problem-solved and did whatever was needed to make sure that when our students walked through the doors, their school still felt like their school.

So when Thursday finally arrived, we were a little too busy welcoming our kids back, settling into classrooms and doing what we love to remember to take the perfect first-day photos.

And honestly, that feels pretty fitting.

Because after everything this summer brought, the most important thing wasn’t capturing the moment.

It was getting here.

Our students are back. Our teachers are back. Our classrooms are full again.

We’re home. And we couldn’t be more grateful. 💚

From challenges to new beginnings! While we’re still rebuilding after the fire, today marks a huge step: the Burrow is officially here! This isn’t just a building, it’s a symbol of our community’s strength. Stay tuned as we rebuild, together.

In moments like this, we are reminded just how strong and caring the THS community truly is.

Following the small fire on campus earlier this week, our focus has been on safety, communication, and making sure our students and families continue to feel supported. We are grateful that no students were in the building, everyone is safe, and we have been able to make plans for summer camp to continue in a temporary location.

There is still work ahead as we move through cleaning, testing, repairs, and the insurance process, but we are taking each step carefully and thoughtfully.

For those who have asked how to help, donations can be made through the link in our bio.

We are so grateful for this community. 💚

Investing in our team so we can better support our students.

This weekend, members of THS team traveled to Dallas to attend the Creating Trauma Sensitive Schools Conference. It was an inspiring few days filled with new ideas, meaningful conversations, and practical strategies that will help us continue creating safe, supportive, and relationship-focused learning environments for our students.

We believe that learning never stops, not just for our students, but for our staff too. Every opportunity to grow professionally strengthens the care and education we provide each day.

💚 We can’t wait to put what we’ve learned into practice!

We are almost there! 💚🧡

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our THS community, we have raised just under $600,000 toward our $775,000 Build Our Burrow goal, approximately 77% of the way there.

In May alone, our parent and alumni community raised $158,450 and fully achieved the May Match.

We are also celebrating generous support from the Fondren Foundation, Houston Junior Forum, and The Garden Club of Houston — helping us build and improve spaces where students feel safe, supported, understood, and ready to grow.

Exciting things are happening at THS because of this community.

Help us keep building our burrow together. Link in bio to support the campaign.

There is something incredibly special about watching our students grow, and even more special when they come back to give back!

This summer, we were thrilled to welcome THS alumna Ava as a volunteer at Summer Camp! Ava spent time helping our campers, supporting activities, and being a positive role model for our students.

Seeing former students return to our community is a wonderful reminder that THS is more than a school—it’s a family. We are so proud of the young woman Ava has become and grateful for the time she shared with us this summer.

Thank you, Ava, for your kindness, enthusiasm, and willingness to help make Summer Camp a great experience for our campers. We loved having you back on campus! 💚

Thank You, Houston Junior Forum!

We are incredibly grateful to for their generous $10,000 grant to support the renovation of our Sensory Room.

This space plays an important role in helping our students develop self-regulation skills, manage emotions, and feel ready to learn. Thanks to this gift, we can create an even more supportive and therapeutic environment for the children we serve.

Thank you for investing in our students and our mission! 🦔💚

Our first ever Farmers Market at THS was a huge success! 🌿💛

We are so proud of our students and staff, who worked incredibly hard to create some truly amazing handmade items, treats, and projects. From planning and creating to selling and supporting one another, this event was such a beautiful example of our community coming together. ✨

We can’t wait for next year’s market already!

Last week, we had not one, but two very special reasons to celebrate 💚

It was Administrative Professionals Day and Ms. Rachel’s 5th year at THS!

Rachel is the heart of our front office, the calm in the chaos, and our go-to for just about everything (including the occasional “school nurse” moment!) She brings warmth, humor, and unwavering support to our students, families, and staff every single day.

We are so lucky to have her as part of our community—thank you, Ms. Rachel, for all that you do and for the love you bring to THS. Here’s to many more years! ✨🦔
