A MESSAGE FROM THE TMSL OFFICE FOR INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

In the loop. For immediate release.

TMSL Professor SpearIt heads to Pacific Northwest to serve as visiting professor at Gonzaga University School of Law and Seattle University School of Law

SpearIt, Texas Southern University law professor and author of American Prisons: A Critical Primer on Culture and Conversion to Islam, has accepted invitations (following a nationwide search) to teach as a visiting law professor at Gonzaga University for the 2018-19 academic year. During his visit at Gonzaga, he will teach, among other courses, Criminal Law and Law and Religion, and will work closely with the school's Center for Civil and Human Rights. Prior to arriving at Gonzaga, SpearIt will spend his third summer as a visiting professor at Seattle University, where he has previously taught Criminal Law and Professional Responsibility; in summer 2018, he will teach Criminal Law in a program that allows newly admitted students the opportunity to take Criminal Law the summer prior to their first fall semester. Gonzaga and Seattle's selection of SpearIt is a great endorsement of his teaching ability.

TMSL congratulates SpearIt on these achievements and will look forward to his return to teaching TMSL students.

Check out the State Bar's highlight on TMSL's very own Professor Timothy Adams.

This week, we are highlighting Texas Young Lawyers Association Director Timothy Adams of the Harris County District Attorney's Office, where he practices criminal law.

He joined the TYLA board to help support other young lawyers and future lawyers through volunteerism.

“I’d advise other TYLA members to seek out and serve on a bar committee that’s related to something that you’re genuinely interested in, and you’ll find yourself networking with like-minded people,” he said. “Your service will be intrinsically rewarding, plus there will be ample opportunities for professional growth.”

It is the duty of the State Bar of Texas to improve and advance the quality of legal services to the public, and foster integrity and ethical conduct in the legal profession. The attorney grievance system is vital to these efforts; however, the workings of the system aren’t always well understood.

In an effort to provide more information, State Bar President Laura Gibson recently moderated a CLE webinar titled “What Every Lawyer Should Know About the Attorney Grievance System.” It is now available to all members to watch on demand, for free, for 1.25 hours of MCLE ethics credit.

The CLE can be viewed here: https://www.texasbarcle.com/CLE/AABuy0.asp?sProductType=EV&lID=21135

TMSL alumni, Brian Middleton is the current Fort Bend County district attorney.

Brian Middleton wrote a piece on the new stop and yield law and the death of Lisa Torry Smith in the November issue of the Texas Bar Journal.

“Motor vehicles, when operated in an unsafe manner, can be deadly weapons. The Lisa Torry Smith Act is specific to crosswalk areas and creates a ‘stop and yield’ duty for vehicle operators when driving in those areas. Drivers who violate the law may be held criminally responsible, which could include a Class C misdemeanor traffic violation up to a state jail felony if the violation causes serious bodily injury.”
