We mourn the loss and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Richard Tapia, an internationally renowned mathematician, National Medal of Science recipient, and one of Rice University's most influential educators.

Through his groundbreaking scholarship, generous mentorship, and lifelong commitment to broadening access in STEM, Dr. Tapia touched countless lives and empowered generations of students.

His passing is a profound loss for the Rice community and for all who were inspired by his work, wisdom, and heart. His legacy will continue through the Tapia Center, the many lives he shaped, and the lasting work he leaves behind.

This week is the Teacher Appreciation Week and today is the National Teacher Day. Endless Thank You to our teachers. What you do is HEART work. We wouldn’t be where we are today and will never get to where we want to be without you.

So grateful to those of you who participated in this year’s 24-Hour Challenge! A heartfelt THANK YOU! Your gift contributed to $3,285 raised in support of Rice University School Mathematics Project (RUSMP). We came a little short of the goal of 75 donors, but it is still successful; and it is great to see the incredible support from our community.

Gifts made during this year’s 24-hour challenge will be used for scholarships for students and/or teachers to attend RUSMP summer 2026 programs. Depending on the camp, three to five full scholarships for students or one full and one-half scholarships for teachers can be awarded. We will publish the details of the scholarship awards on our website by the end of summer.
