2026 MLS Graduate Patrick Downie delivered his epic Odyssey tile just in time for the much anticipated arrival of the Christopher Nolan film. Patrick's tile is written in Greek and absolutely beautiful! Deaconess Ahlman is looking forward to having it added to her ceiling. If you are a student who saw the movie this summer, let Deaconess know and we will put together a discussion group when school starts back up. This tale of the complex Odysseus longing to go home yet also struggling against his hubris and the wrath of the gods is also the tale of the faithfully waiting Penelope and of resurrection and restoration. It is one worth revisiting as often as we can! Thank you, Patrick for this beautiful reminder!

This summer, a group of Upper School students came along on a journey with Deaconess Ahlman: read the book Emma, discuss as able around everyone's travel, and go see the play next Spring at The George. After Volume one, they met in her classroom for tea and Snickerdoodle cookies. After Volume 2, they met at Sweet Paris to discuss. On July 3 & 19th, students met at Deaconess' house for charcuterie, fruit, and brownies. They discussed volume three and snuck in a viewing of the Gwyneth Paltrow version from the 90s. Deaconess Ahlman says, "I have loved every minute! Thanks for spending a little of your summer with me...and Jane Austen, and Emma."

The first MLS Senior class began the tradition of painting a ceiling tile for the Humane Letters classroom with a book cover of a book read at MLS with a beautiful tile depicting Fahrenheit 451 by Brigitte Duttlinger. Last year, Caroline Killinger painted a Boethius quote from her Senior Thesis and Alex Zamora painted a tile depicting Milton's Paradise Lost. This year, Thomas Ahlman has contributed a tile dedicated to The Return of the King, the third book in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Deaconess Ahlman looks forward to many more filling her room as we continue to graduate our wonderful seniors!
