Texas Southern University mourns the passing of Mrs. Georgia D. Provost, a beloved alumna and lifelong member of the Tiger family whose life and legacy are deeply woven into the history of our University and the city of Houston.
Mrs. Provost’s love for Texas Southern University was evident throughout her life. She was a steadfast supporter of the University and a fierce advocate for the students, alumni, and community that make Tiger Nation so special. Her commitment to Texas Southern was more than a connection to an institution; it was a lifelong expression of pride, service and love.
Affectionately known as the "Mayor of Third Ward," Mrs. Provost was often seen arriving on campus with her TSU pin prominently displayed on the back of her clothing, a distinctive symbol of the profound connection she maintained with her alma mater. When asked about the placement of the pin, she would simply say, “I wear it on my back because TSU has ALWAYS had my back.” Her words were a fitting reflection of the lifelong bond she shared with Texas Southern University and the unwavering pride she carried for the institution she loved so dearly.
We were pleased to present her with the first-ever Presidential Service Award at our Spring 2026 Commencement in May.
Just days ago, members of the University leadership visited Mrs. Provost and reminded her that Tiger Nation was praying for her and her family. We are grateful that, in her final days, she knew that the University she cherished so deeply was holding her and her family in its thoughts and prayers.
We extend our deepest condolences to her son, Jerome, the Provost family, and the many members of the Texas Southern University and Houston communities who had the privilege of knowing, loving and being inspired by her.
Mrs. Provost’s presence will be deeply missed. Her love for Texas Southern University, however, will remain part of her enduring legacy.
