From 3100 Cleburne to the pages of Vogue.

In a historic milestone for Texas Southern University, the Ocean of Soul Marching Band is featured in a multi-page editorial spread in the Summer 2026 issue of Vogue Magazine. The feature highlights the artistry, innovation, and cultural impact of the Ocean of Soul Marching Band, Motion of the Ocean Majorette Dancers, Platinum Girls Baton Twirlers, and Ocean Waves Flag Line, with students receiving individual credit for their contributions throughout the publication.

Published during Black Music Month and the print version hitting the stands on Juneteenth, the feature celebrates the enduring influence of Black musical traditions and the transformative role HBCUs continue to play in shaping culture around the world.

The collaboration also represents an unprecedented moment in both higher education and media. Texas Southern University is the first university ever to receive a dedicated multi-page editorial feature of this scale in Vogue, marking a first-of-its-kind partnership that places an institution's students, culture, and artistic excellence at the center of one of the world's most influential publications.

As Texas Southern University continues its Road to 100 toward its Centennial in 2027, this landmark recognition further affirms what generations of Tigers have always known: the Ocean of Soul is more than a marching band. It is a cultural force whose impact extends far beyond the field.

On this day in 1951, our university made a historic shift.

The name was officially changed from Texas State University for Negroes to Texas Southern University - a change sparked by the powerful voices of students who petitioned the Texas Legislature to remove the phrase “for Negroes.”

This historic milestone reflects the courage, leadership, and advocacy of students whose voices helped shape the future of our university.

Today, we honor their legacy and the enduring spirit of progress that continues to define Texas Southern University.
