Join Cypress Winds for an evening celebrating the music that helped shape the American wind band tradition. The program features Sketches on a Tudor Psalm, Walking Tune, Overture to Candide, Atomic Time, Liberty Fanfare, and El Capitan—spanning folk-inspired melodies, brilliant overtures, and the timeless energy of the classic American march. Fine arts programs—and the teachers who lead them—are one of the jewels of our public school system, arguably the crown jewel. Yes, those folks who don’t cause much of a fuss in education circles. Who don’t divide legislators along party lines. The teachers who generally play nice with everyone, who often spend the longest hours at school, and who, instead of obsessing over school accountability and ratings, like to talk about nurturing the human spirit and changing students’ lives. 🪈🥁🪇🎶

These courses and activities usually incur higher costs—work materials, instruments, uniforms, travel—than other classes. If local school districts don’t have the budget to cover them, parents and communities must make up the difference with fundraisers and sponsorships. Arts programs are “seen as a luxury or as a nice to have, rather than a need to have. But the reality is that arts are necessary,” said James Talarico, a Democratic representative who serves North Austin and Pflugerville.
