Monday lecture: Lobachevsky to Luzin: The Trials and Tribulations
of Abstract Mathematics in early 20th Century Russia
In this talk, which is aimed at general audiences, Professor Tomforde will uncover the dramatic and sometimes violent story of paradigm-shattering moments in the history of Russian and Soviet mathematics. From Nikolai Lobachevsky’s introduction of non-Euclidean Geometry, to the groundbreaking creation of new and different types of mathematics such as the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms, Russian mathematical revolutions often clashed with the
political revolutions – and revolutionaries – of the period.
Come to the lecture to have your mind blown by alternate geometries and to learn about Russia’s world famous influences on this crucial aspect of the modern world.
And come for the pizza.
