Houston YEA

Houston YEA The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) teaches junior high and high school students the skills they need to start and run their own successful business. YEA!

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a year-long program that teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own REAL businesses. was developed at the University of Rochester in 2004 with the support of a grant from the Kauffman Foundation. Houston Community College is excited to be introducing YEA! to the Houston Community! guides high school students through the process

of starting and running a legitimate business or social movement over the course of a full academic year. has graduated almost 600 students over the past 7 years, who have started almost 450 businesses and social movements! graduates started as students, and left the program as CEOs of their own companies! Over the course of the program, students:

- Brainstorm business ideas
- Write a business plan
- Interact with business professionals
- Pitch their business plan to potential “investors” (think Shark Tank meets the Apprentice meets American Idol)
- Obtain funding
- Legally register their businesses
- Participate in a Trade Show
- Actually launch their own businesses or social movements

The Young Entrepreneurs will be a part of a week long extravaganza at Hanh Gallery supporting a wonderful literacy foundation called READ3Zero Literacy Foundation that encourages and inspires kids of all ages to read 30 minutes a day and write their own stories. The Young Entrepreneurs felt that it was only fitting to support education as they have been supported in theirs!

They will be selling their products and services at Hanh Gallery on the first night of the extravaganza, next Monday, May 5th from 5pm-8pm. A portion of their proceeds will go to Read3ZERO!

Quote from Program Manager, Josephine Firat:

"Back in September, during the first day of class, the students at Alief Taylor High School were just that, students. They had regular days, normal teenage life problems, and a report card/progress report to let them know how they were doing. Now it's April, and on top of being a student, they own their own businesses, and their days are filled with managing their enterprises and everything that accompanies that process. They face problems like cash management, inventory, and customers, and their new report cards are their financial statements. I've seen these students grow leaps and bounds in just these eight months, and when anyone sees them at their trade show at the University of St. Thomas next Tuesday, "teenagers" is the last word they'll use."

These 13 students, ages 16 and 17, will debut their newly launched businesses or social movements to consumers, potential clients or investors. Free and open to the public, this event will also give patrons the opportunity to support these students by purchasing products and/or signing up for servic…
