BE AWARE!! Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) are oftentimes NOT everything that you may need if you encounter a need for long term care! The "benefits" that are offered (inclusion of dental care, vision care and prescription drug benefits) may not outweigh the cost you may encounter in so many other aspects; not to mention the fact that most of these advertised 'benefits' are a substantially lower cost than major-medical coverage, which is the area that you could need the largest coverage benefit to be!)
Always note: ANYTHING that is advertised excessively, will usually benefit the provider of the service far better than the benefits offered to you! Products, services and materials that are truly advantageous to the populus at-large are usually not advertised excessively… they are usually kept as secrets, only for the privileged few!
Some Medicare Advantage Plans (Medicare Part C) will now cover certain types of long-term care, and a few may cover some at-home services and supplies, but for the most part MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLANS DO NOT COVER LONG-TERM CARE!!
PLEASE!!! ALWAYS ASK IF THE MEDICARE PART C PLAN that you are about to sign up with, WILL COVER LONG-TERM CARE (LTCF, LTCH, LTCI, LTCO, SNF, etc.) Long-term care is NOT only for elderly people: it may become necessary for rehabilitative and habilitative purposes for individuals of ANY AGE!
MEDICAID, a federally funded program for the “medically needy, aged” individuals, is run by each individual state, is an ASSITANCE PROGRAM, NOT AN MEDICAL INSURANCE PROGRAM, as we relate it to ‘insurance coverage’. Medicaid will usually offer long-term care in a facility and/or in-home care (LTCF = Long-term Care Facility; SNF = Skilled Nursing Facility). But, BEWARE!!! In order to qualify for MEDICAID benefits, one must have a limited income amount, and usually cannot have over $2K in any financial account. One must have no “extra assets” like a second home, rental property, multiple cars, boats, etc. The homestead home is the only home that the Medicaid recipient is usually allowed to possess; and they or their spouse MUST be residing in it. If not, the home becomes part of the payment one has to surrender in order to cover the long-term facility cost! (Children living in the home, do not count as a reason to retain the homestead and not have to surrender it for payment for long-term care.)
Medicare is a federal health insurance program that has four parts:
• Part A covers hospital, skilled nursing, and hospice services.
• Part B covers outpatient services.
• Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is a private-sector alternative that bundles Parts A and B, and sometimes Part D.
• Part D covers prescription drugs.
