Congratulations to STCL Houston alumna Keri D. Brown ’06, a partner at Baker Botts for receiving the 2022 Terry Lee Grantham Memorial Award from the Texas Bar Foundation, a prestigious honor given annually to an outstanding Texas lawyer. First Latina Judge in Harris County Civil Courts, Debra Ibarra Mayfield, Dies at 47 03/15/2022

South Texas College of Law Houston extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Hon. Debra Ibarra Mayfield, STCL Houston alumna and board member. She proudly served as the first Latina judge in Harris County civil courts. Judge Mayfield passed away Friday, March 11, at age 47 after a two-year battle with cancer. Read more here:

The Board of Advocates at South Texas College of Law Houston coordinated and hosted the National Online Moot Court Competition Jan. 19-21, and 75 South Texas alumni judged the rounds leading up to the final. University of Georgia School of Law’s team – Lindsey Adams, Rachel Byers and Molly Laughlin – bested the team from Seton Hall, comprised of Mia Dohrmann, Gregory Batt and Keegan Sheehan, for the championship. The final panel of judges were all from the Southern District of Texas: Judge David S. Morales, U.S. District Judge, Judge Charles S. Eskridge III, U.S. District Judge, and Judge Andrew M. Edison, U.S. Magistrate Judge.

South Texas College of Law Houston students, most in their first year, are serving as judges this week for the American Moot Court Association (AMCA) National Championship. Undergraduate students from colleges and universities across the country are competing in the virtual tournament. South Texas alumnus and board member and Dallas attorney Andrew Sommerman ’86, owner of Sommerman McCaffity, Quesada & Geisler, LLP, cofounded the AMCA in 1999. It’s the largest intercollegiate moot court organization in the U.S. https://amcamootcourt.org

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote in “Letter from a Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963” that “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” At South Texas College of Law Houston, we honor Dr. King’s legacy today and continue to educate those who are ready to fight injustice and advocate for the voiceless.

Our campus is closed today and will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 18.
