With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Richard A. Tapia.

Dr. Tapia was a distinguished mathematician and professor at Rice University whose groundbreaking research and activism inspired generations of students.

He founded Rice University’s Tapia Center to champion his dedication to increasing the participation of underrepresented minorities in science and engineering.

In 2022, Arte Público Press published his book, Losing the Precious Few: How America Fails to Educate its Minorities in Science and Engineering which documented his research on disparity in education.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

May he rest in eternal peace 🕊️

We are excited to announce our special fundraising luncheon, Celebrate a Legacy of Latino Literature, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the University of Houston Hilton – Waldorf Astoria Ballroom.

For nearly five decades, Arte Público Press, founded by Nicolás Kanellos, has shaped American literature by championing U.S. Latino voices and celebrating the stories that define our cultural heritage. This event highlights the enduring impact of books, storytelling, and access to literature in building more inclusive cultural and educational landscapes.

The program will feature a fireside chat with acclaimed journalist John Quiñones and Nicolás Kanellos, exploring the power of storytelling, the importance of preserving literary histories, and the future of Latino voices in American letters.
