Alief Heflin Elementary School Alief ISD is a high-performing, comprehensive K-12 public school district. Talmadge Heflin Elementary, home of the Heflin Hounds, was founded in 1982. Mr.

Heflin is named after a former school board member and outstanding citizen of our community. Heflin served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives for many years.

As the district plans for the future amid declining enrollment over multiple years, we are evaluating ways to optimize our schools and facility usage footprint, including potential school consolidations.

Community members are invited to attend our upcoming School Optimization Meetings to learn more about the planning process, ask questions, share feedback, and voice concerns.

Here’s when each grade will be celebrating:

K: 10:00-10:30
1st: 10:30-11:00
3rd: 11:20-11:50
2nd: 12:20-12:50
4th: 1:00-1:30

"It Was The Night Before School"
'Twas the night before school, and all through Heflin,
Not a pencil was stirring, not even a pen.
The backpacks were hung by the front doors with care,
In hopes that tomorrow would soon be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While dreams of new crayons danced in their heads.
With first-day outfits laid out with pride,
And a little bit of jitters they tried to hide.
Then out in the hall came a soft happy sound,
It was Heflin the Hound, our favorite hound!
With floppy ears, wagging tail, and joy in his cheer,
He howled, "Welcome back! A new year is here!"
"Get ready to read, to learn, and to play,
To be kind and be brave every single day.
We've sharpened our pencils, we've swept every floor,
We've opened our hearts and we've opened the door!"
So now as you sleep, dear Heflin crew,
Remember our motto will carry you through.
When nerves feel big or the work feels tall,
Just lift your head and give your best howl!
Choose Joy in the hallways, Choose Joy in each class,
Choose joy when you stumble, and joy when you pass.
