October recognizes Down Syndrome Awareness Month – a month dedicated to shining a light on the abilities and dreams of those with Down Syndrome. Down syndrome is the most common birth defect in the United States, affecting about 1 in 800 children. The Rise School of Houston provides the highest quality of early educational services to children ages 6 months to 6 years with and without disabilities in an inclusive environment. Rise delivers comprehensive education, intervention and therapy to its students during their formative years. Rise is best known for serving young children with Down syndrome, which represents approximately 75% of the children with disabilities and illnesses.

Rise is the only community resource in Houston that delivers intensive education, intervention and therapy during the entire formative infant, toddler and preschool years in a school-wide integrated environment. It operates a year-round educational program, with approximately 10 weeks off for holiday and spring/summer breaks. Each school day, Rise delivers intensive education, therapy, and intervention to its students. To achieve their maximum potential, each child at Rise receives an individualized instructional plan. A master's level teacher in special education leads each classroom assisted by two teaching assistants, ensuring a 3:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Additionally, an adult with developmental disabilities is employed full-time as a classroom assistant, helping each classroom function more effectively and creating a workforce as diverse as the student body.

I was honored to speak to three different sets of teachers, staff, and administrators at The Rise School of Houston this week about how to prepare to open up the school during Covid-19. They have worked incredibly hard and have done everything possible to keep everyone safe, engaged, and thriving!

I encourage folks to learn more about this school. Our kids went there and received a foundation of inclusion, empathy, and exceptional instruction to prepare them for elementary school and beyond. It's an amazing place where every teacher, administrator, parent, and child gives so much of themselves for each other. It's a shining example of community building during a time when that's more difficult to find.
