Yesterday we closed our doors to stay safe from the freeze and today we’re back, bundled up and learning! 🧣🧤

In true Montessori spirit, this rare Houston cold gives our children a meaningful Practical Life opportunity: putting on winter coats, zipping, buttoning, and caring for themselves with confidence and independence. When real life meets the classroom, even chilly mornings become rich lessons. đź’™

Today our toddlers prepared arepas with roasted vegetables and beans, mashed fresh guacamole, and enjoyed mango jello for dessert.

Cooking experiences like these are a vital part of the toddler community; where independence, coordination, and care for self and others grow through meaningful, hands-on work. From washing and chopping to serving and sharing, food preparation nurtures confidence, concentration, and a deep respect for the process.

This is how community, culture, and joy come together at the table 🦋

Maria Montessori saw childhood not as preparation for life, but as life itself. 🦋

These eleven principles remind us to trust the child, respect their rhythm, and nurture independence, curiosity, and inner growth.

At Northwood Montessori nature is not a backdrop, it is a teacher. 🌿

When children are given time and space to be outdoors, to watch a leaf fall, follow an ant’s path, or feel the rhythm of the seasons, they build concentration, wonder, and a deep respect for life. True observation requires slowness, presence, and freedom; gifts that nature so generously offers.

“There must be provision for the child to have contact with nature; to understand and appreciate the order, the harmony and the beauty in nature.” - Maria Montessori

On this day, we celebrate the anniversary of the Casa dei Bambini in Rome, opened in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori. What began as a small school for children in the San Lorenzo district became the birthplace of a revolutionary approach to education; one that trusted children, respected their development, and carefully observed how they learn best.

More than a century later, Montessori’s legacy continues to thrive around the world because it is grounded in science. Her method was built on observation, experimentation, and an understanding of child development; principles that modern neuroscience and psychology continue to affirm. The Casa dei Bambini reminds us that education rooted in evidence, respect, and curiosity is not only timeless, but essential.

A day that changed education forever. 🦋

Today we mark the anniversary of a pivotal moment in the history of education: the opening of the first Casa dei Bambini on January 6, 1907.

In the San Lorenzo district of Rome, Dr. Maria Montessori was invited to oversee a small group of children who had previously been overlooked by the educational system. What emerged from this modest beginning was not simply a classroom, but a profound shift in how we understand childhood, learning, and human potential.

Within the walls of that first Children’s House, Montessori observed something remarkable. When children were offered freedom within a carefully prepared environment, meaningful work, and deep respect for their developmental needs, they revealed concentration, independence, and joy in learning that challenged long-held assumptions about education. These observations became the foundation of what would grow into the Montessori approach, an approach grounded not in theory alone, but in careful scientific observation of the child.

More than a century later, the legacy of the Casa dei Bambini continues to shape classrooms across the world. Its influence reaches far beyond materials or methods. It reminds us that education is ultimately an act of trust, trust in the child’s innate drive to learn, to contribute, and to become.

As we reflect on this anniversary, we are invited to return to the essence of Montessori’s work, to observe more closely, to prepare environments with intention, and to honour the child as an active participant in their own development.

From a single room in Rome to a global movement, it all began with a simple yet radical idea: follow the child.

As we step into 2026 , we’re taking a moment to reflect on the one just passed; filled with curiosity, growth, small hands doing big work, and children discovering who they are becoming.

The early years are formative in ways that last a lifetime. During this time, children move through sensitive periods; unique windows when they are especially ready to learn skills like language, movement, order, independence, and social connection.

At Northwood Montessori, we thoughtfully prepare an environment that supports each of these stages, meeting children exactly where they are. Through hands-on materials, freedom within structure, and respectful guidance, we nurture a deep love of learning that grows naturally from within.

As we welcome the year ahead, we remain committed to honoring childhood, supporting every sensitive period, and guiding each child along their own beautiful journey.

Here’s to another year of discovery, confidence, and joyful learning.

At Northwood Montessori, independence begins in the toddler environment

Every detail of the classroom is thoughtfully prepared for the child; child-sized furniture, beautiful materials within reach, and real activities that invite purposeful work. Toddlers are free to choose, explore, and repeat tasks at their own pace, building concentration and confidence along the way.

Through practical life activities like pouring, cleaning, dressing, and caring for their space, children learn, “I can do it myself.” With gentle guidance and clear limits, they develop coordination, self-discipline, and respect for themselves and others.

This early foundation of independence isn’t rushed, it’s nurtured. And it stays with the child for life. 🦋
