Dear Friends,
As you are probably aware the corona virus is creating a massive healthcare and financial crisis across the country and the world. This will impact a lot of immigrant families in the coming weeks and months.
We have been working behind the scenes to address the immediate concerns of a lot of immigrants. We take some solace to report, Immigration Voice has convinced the House to include a provision in the upcoming stimulus bill which says - in light of the indefinite closing of USCIS offices and U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, all existing lawful immigration statuses and EADs will be automatically extended for 1 year from the date the legislation is enacted. As per the current language, if you have an H4 EAD, it will be extended for a year. If you have an H-1B about to expire, it will be renewed and you can remain here even if furloughed until the crisis is over.
We need the Senate to agree to add the language into its stimulus in order for the doctors and other critical care workers we have in our community to be able to treat patients and go to work without fear of losing their status if they die. Please call your Senators and make sure they understand the importance of this provision and of the work you do.
While we usually do not deviate from working to pass bill S.386, these are unprecedented times, and we have decided to temporarily change focus. We understand, too many of our brothers and sisters are likely to face unforeseen hardships and some are getting sick on the front lines to provide healthcare for all of us. This will help people from all countries in similar situations, so all of the anti-Indian immigrant racism these other groups have, will hopefully not surface here.
As the Senate and House are working on the deal, we will keep you posted if there is any development with this new provision for providing temporary relief. These are unprecedented times and we urge everyone to practice collective selflessness to support and take care of your neighbors, friends and even folks who you might not know. We owe this duty to ourselves and to our next generation. Stay safe and follow the guidelines of the CDC.
Please be in the lookout for relevant action items on this matter tomorrow morning.
Immigration Voice
PS: Please share this post, so more people know that relief is possible if they do their share in these trying times.
