To do this, we offer our Career Test Drive® Fair experience and personal advising to provide opportunities towards economic stability and independence. CenterPoint Energy is helping Houston students discover careers that keep our communities running.

Through support of BridgeYear’s Pipefitter Career Test Drive® simulation, over 5,300 students have stepped into the role of a pipefitter and experienced the work firsthand. They practice assembling a gas meter system, following safety procedures, and troubleshooting while learning about the critical role pipefitters play in building and maintaining the systems that carry resources like natural gas and the pathways that lead to rewarding, in-demand careers.

Career exposure opens the door, but workforce preparation helps young adults take the next step.

As one of our corporate volunteers shared:

"It’s not just about knowing what opportunities are out there. Young adults also need the confidence and skills to pursue them and know how to show up when an opportunity comes their way."

BridgeYear brings career exposure, workforce preparation, and employer engagement together to help young adults build the skills needed to pursue in-demand career pathways and successfully transition into the workforce.

What an incredible conclusion to the Energy Expressway program! Our pre-apprentices officially wrapped up two intensive weeks of technical and professional preparation at CenterPoint Energy’s HO Training Facility.⚡️

Throughout the program, students completed hands-on training across four high-growth technical tracks: Renewable Energy, Gas Operations, Lineman Skills, and Electrical Work. To complement their technical training, BridgeYear prepared students to research potential employers, map their hands-on skills to industry roles, and use the STAR Method to navigate professional interviews.

Students put that preparation into practice through one-on-one mock interviews with corporate volunteers from CenterPoint Energy, Quanta Services, Greater Houston Partnership, Hays Electrical, Phillips 66, Texas Mutual Insurance, and NRG. Later that afternoon, candidates sat down for real first-round interviews with Talent Acquisition teams!

We are proud to share that 29 out of 30 students completed the program and earned industry certifications, with more than half of our graduates already receiving conditional job offers! 💼

Energy Expressway is a collaborative initiative between CenterPoint Energy, Quanta Services, Inc., Greater Houston Partnership, and BridgeYear designed to connect local young adults directly to high-wage energy careers.

What does training for a career in the electrical trades actually look like? ⚡

Take a look inside Texas Technical Trade School (TTTS) with Elias, one of BridgeYear’s Electrical Career Cohort graduates, as he shows us the hands-on training behind the trade.

Through our Career Cohorts, BridgeYear helps young adults move from career interest to career preparation by connecting them to technical training, supporting them throughout the program, and helping prepare them for their next step into employment. For Houston employers, graduates like Elisis represent young talent building the skills needed to contribute to our region’s in-demand skilled trades workforce.

“I want a career that gives me stability and the opportunity to build a better life.” 💙

For Takiayh Thompson-Fuller, becoming a Sterile Processing Technician is a meaningful step toward that goal.

BridgeYear’s role in the partnership begins before students enter the clinical setting. For Takiayh and other recent high school graduates, that included recruitment, screening, and career-readiness preparation to help them take the next step with confidence. This fall, Houston Methodist will build on that foundation through its earn-and-learn program, where students will train in a clinical setting while beginning their employment in healthcare.

For Takiayh, that means turning her career goals into a pathway toward a healthcare career where Sterile Processing Technicians earn an average of $28 to $32 per hour, offering the stability and opportunity she’s working toward. 🩺👏

Last week, 8 BridgeYear Career Cohort students completed their HVAC training at Texas Technical Trade School, marking an exciting milestone as they prepare for what comes next. 🎓

This milestone was made possible with the support of Comfort Systems USA, Capital IDEA Houston, and Texas Technical Trade School. From investing in students’ training to providing the resources and opportunities that helped them reach graduation, each partner played an important role in helping BridgeYear students move closer to the workforce.

Through our Career Cohort program, BridgeYear connects young people to technical training and supports them as they build the skills and preparation needed to take their next steps toward the workforce. Partnerships like these help turn career exploration into tangible pathways toward lasting careers and economic mobility.

Through Energy Expressway, leaders from CenterPoint Energy, Quanta Services, Greater Houston Partnership, and BridgeYear came together at the CenterPoint Energy Training Center to connect directly with students and strengthen pathways into Houston’s energy workforce. ⚡

Students led the conversation through their questions, gaining firsthand insight and perspectives from leaders across the industry. Receiving real advice from the executives who run the companies turns an intimidating industry into a clear, reachable career path.

That connection between young talent and industry is where BridgeYear plays a vital role. By preparing students, connecting them to technical training, and working alongside industry partners, BridgeYear helps strengthen the skilled workforce Houston needs for the future.
