We're open! Visit Round 53: The Curious Case of Critical Race... Theory? at PRH from 12-5pm, Wednesday-Sunday. This Round invites us to explore how and why Critical Race Theory (CRT), an analytical framework designed for graduate-level discourse, escaped the academy and became a cultural chimera and catch-all for personal assumptions and/or systems of belief about race in public meetings, education, social media, and among the pundit and political classes.
In the Education House of Round 53 (pictured here), Houston attorneys from the Houston Young Lawyers Association join scholars and students from the University of Houston-Downtown’s Center for Critical Race Studies to explore the evolution of CRT from its legal studies beginnings to its present-day status as a legal obsession. With visual aids provided by Kindred Spirits Design Co., the house highlights the major premises of the academic theory alongside key passages of current legislation in the Texas Senate, which aims to ban CRT in publicly funded schools for good. Visitors to the house will be met with thought-provoking illustrations, questions, and answers that aim to quell curiosity about CRT’s past, present, and purpose, and will walk away better equipped to engage with the remaining art houses in Round 53.
Round 53 is Danielle Burns Wilson's debut as Curator and Art Director at PRH. Participating Artists include David-Jeremiah, Leah Gipson, Tammie Rubin, Adam W. Mckinney, Bradley Ward, ROUX (a collective comprised of Rabea Ballin, Ann Johnson, Lovie Olivia, and Delita Martin), UHD Center for Critical Race Studies, HYLA, and Kindred Spirits Design Co.
