“What do we dedicate ourselves to? Are we self-indulgent or do we define ourselves by repairing the world and completing creation? We are what we commit ourselves to. We have a responsibility to make the world a better place." - Vic Samuels

FotoFest Co-Founder Wendy Watriss remembers J. Victor Samuels (1940-2020).

"A Personal Remembrance"

There aren’t many important civic and education organizations in Houston with which Vic Samuels did not have some experience or input. The range of his civic work matched the expanse of his curiosity and intellect. Whether climbing a mountain with him in Colorado for ALF (American Leadership Forum Houston/Gulf Coast Chapter) or sharing dinner to discuss travels in Russia and Israel, I always had the feeling that Vic was at ease talking about almost anything. He had the knack of always asking the questions that you didn’t expect but wish you had been smart enough to ask. They were good questions, penetrating and challenging. I loved being with him, around him, because I found his energy was so infectious and stimulating. Whether it was the Fourth of July ritual at his and Bobbi’s house on Waverly Court, with dozens of young people in the swimming pool and playing street volleyball, or a Friday night Shabbat, the conversation and company at their house were filled with life and stories of their collective involvement in the affairs of the city.

More than 20 years ago when we were beginning ALF’s outward bound week in Colorado, I remember being able to make a high rock climb blindfolded because of Vic’s encouragement and vocal accompaniment. I enjoyed his sense of achievement and always felt that his innate competitiveness enhanced rather than diminished the life space and people around him. It seemed that he and Bobbi were always surrounded by family or friends. They created a life giving atmosphere colored by a great deal of humor and a certain sense of irony. We shared many good friends in common, most vividly Marv Hoffman and Rosellen Brown whose writings, social values and work in education were close to Vic and Bobbi’s hearts. I am not certain that he ever made it to FotoFest, but he and Bobbi were very interested in the cultural and civic outreach of FotoFest in Houston and abroad, particularly in the FotoFest Literacy Through Photography learning program, which they supported for many years through their family foundation.

Both he and Bobbi had Masters’ of Arts in Teaching. Vic was an entrepreneur, a risk taker, a strategic thinker and builder. He was not only successful in business but believed in sharing his success by mentoring young people and emerging leaders. He received many awards for his community service in education and social service work. He helped in the desegregation of the Houston school system and was active in numerous political campaigns. He exemplified the entrepreneurial character of Houston at its best because he applied his business experience to community building and civic improvement.

Fred and I are fortunate to have shared many good times with Vic and Bobbi. He was a good friend. Houston was lucky to have Vic Samuels.

A heartfelt thank you to Literacy Through Photography at FotoFest for not only helping our Be the Peace Be the Hope students at Las Americas Middle School achieve better communication skills through the use of photography and visual imagery, but also transforming the classroom into a stimulating environment to give students the confidence to express themselves.

Our first week with Be the Peace Be the Hope at Las Americas Middle School is off to a great start!

The Circle of Trust allowed students to create a safe space where they discovered and expressed that they have more potential, aspirations and resources than they sometimes think. Students have also explored what trust means to them by creating collectively their own mindmapping.

Many thanks to all our facilitators, volunteers, sponsors and the Las Americas Middle School team for helping to implement our social and emotional learning program! Las Americas Team is definitely a true blessing! We are honored to be able to partner with its team and grateful to be able to bring extra supports to its very vulnerable students.

Special thanks to Bridge Up at The Menninger Clinic and Houston ISD Multilingual for supporting this amazing program with Las Americas Middle School, which will allow us to detect mental and behavioral issues in at-risk youth and prevent disengagement, delinquency, bullying and on-campus violence.

Our mental health partners include the Houston Galveston Institute, dba HGI Counseling Center, The Center for the Healing Arts and Sciences and the Alliance for Multicultural Community Services. Wellness Center.
Our year long program will provide SEL through the arts, so we also have partners with many wonderful art and educational organizations, such as HGOco, Literacy Through Photography at FotoFest, MECA Houston Tx, Prelude Music Foundation, 'uMove'', The WIDE School and Xavier Educational Academy. We are immensely grateful for All of You!

During after school residencies, students are known to have a little more energy 😅 So we started the session off with a memory dance challenge where students mimicked each other's moves by memory.

Then, we had a quick instruction on lighting using a photographer’s reflector and learned how photographers use a golden light in natural settings for beautiful group portraits ☀️ Student’s used the reflector to take images of their peers showing off their unique dance moves 😃

After the light instruction, the students were introduced to different camera settings and lenses. In particular, students enjoyed the Sports Action setting to capture students running, swinging, sliding, and more!

As we approach the end of black history month, we are recollecting images of the 2020 FotoFest Biennial, African Cosmologies, led by Director of the renowned London-based photographic art institution Autograph ABP, Mark Sealy. Literacy Through Photography students participated in a youth field trip and explored the history of photography through the notions of Africa.

We believe in the importance of children having representation of their own culture through art and photography 💛 The idea of accurate representation can contribute to student's self worth and allow them to connect with themselves on a deeper level, thus permitting them to create art that perhaps would have never come to surface.

We ask you to consider how you can continue to incorporate representation into your classrooms and homes. Why is this important to you and your kids? Let us know in the comments below ☺️

👋 Hi LTP parents and educators!

Here is another exercise you can do at home with your students or on your own:

👉Think about the aspects of home. In each quadrant of the house above, create a list of memories and/or items that represent each aspect of home to you. Keep the keywords in mind when working on this exercise.

👉NEXT! You can practice the Photography Activity and get creative while including the Elements of Photography. This is an amazing exercise for students to explore what the concept of home means to them.

🤩This is an excerpt from our last HOME workshop led by @gabriellaanalise. There is a corresponding Nearpod lesson free for you to use in class until March 2, 2022. Check out the resources in our bio!

❤️Tag us or use the hashtag #LTPCREATE to share your photography activity!

Meet our teaching artist of the week, Leticia Contreras (They/Them/She/Her). Leticia will be leading our Community workshop this Thursday, Feb. 17!

Their favorite thing about the LTP program is connecting with the students and with Houston’s expansive communities.

Leticia was introduced to photography at a young age and loves to see the excitement grow in her students as they discover it is an empowering tool for self-expression.

Leticia is also a Yoga instructor, both in person and online! Their Instagram is @laletty.mala

Make sure to follow our page and register for our online teacher/parent workshop located in the link of our bio! ❤️

📸 This is how we guide our students when taking self-portraits!

An "Identity Circle" is an easy exercise to do! Simply fill out each portion of the pie chart (age, hobbies, culture, etc.) or choose your own topics that represent your unique identity.

Afterwards, create a self-portrait using one thing from the Identity Circle while integrating some of the Elements of a Portrait. It is fun to see how one detail of your identity can bring a broader conversation of your character! 🤗

Woohoo! 🎉 We just finished a ONE WEEK residency at Hall Success Academy in @aldineschooldistrict, led by teaching artist Felicia Johnson @jujusoreal!

The project that the students were working on is from a lesson in the African Cosmologies curriculum entitled, “Me vs Me.”

In the lesson, students wrote about themselves, their lives, their hopes and dreams. They began with two lists: one that described their very best traits (Superpowers) and another that described their least desirable traits (Kryptonite). Then they took photos of themselves that portrayed traits from those lists. Using the multiple exposure feature on the cameras, they were able to make a composite photo of the seemingly dichotomous aspects of themselves.

Felicia says, “We had a great time with this lesson. The students were a little hesitant to open up at first with the writing, but when it was time to take pictures they were ready and willing to get the job done. They were very expressive and had a lot of fun”.

@ya_houston thank you for sponsoring this residency! We couldn’t do it without you 🙌

We would like to express our sincere appreciation for all the hard work Emily Areta contributed to Fotofest LTP as a Program Director since 2018. 🎉

Among other efforts, Emily led the creation of the program’s Revised Curriculum, published in 2020, and she led the creation of the LTP Online virtual residency program during the pandemic. Additionally, she conducted the Spanish translation project (debuting in March, 2022!) which will allow us to connect with students across Spanish and bilingual communities. She is proud of the work she was able to accomplish and will continue to advocate for Teaching Artists and create educational content.

Emily, thank you for your impressive work ethic and innovative ideas to advance the LTP curriculum! We will miss working with you but wish you great success in your new endeavor 🤍

✨Gabriella Pomales (she/they) is our virtual teaching artist who led our thematic workshop last week! ✨

Gabriella is passionate about making education, especially in the arts, more accessible by bringing resources directly to our communities. Her favorite part in working with students is helping them explore their creativity.

She states, "Art and writing provide limitless possibilities for self expression. Knowing that there is no wrong way to be an artist, and teaching this to students at a young age, reinforces the idea that their feelings and ideas are intrinsically valuable”.

Thank you for all that you do @gabriellaanalise 🥰🙌

Literacy through photography! 📸 These images were all captured by students in the LTP program 🙌

We introduce students to the “Elements of Photography” at the beginning and during the course of our program. These elements include:

🔹Line
🔹Shape
🔹Texture
🔹Color
🔹Light/Shadow
🔹Perspective

Here, we see them explore the elements during an activity scavenger hunt 👀🔎

Which example of student work is your favorite and which element do you think they were trying to portray?

Students at Fotofest LTP observing a lesson about photographers and their work. Here they are learning about street artist, Vivian Maier @vivianmaierarchive.

After watching the video, the students were so excited to take their own street photographs at their very own school playground! 🥰

Every day we incorporate lessons on photography, videography, or literacy and find ways to connect it to student's social emotional growth.

❤️ We appreciate our Teaching Artist, Adanna @wearecharu, for taking these photos at Roberts Elementary (sponsored by @ya_houston).

🚨Progress update 🚨

We are in the works of breaking language barriers!

Our curriculum is currently being translated by native Spanish speakers, such as our very own teaching artist Moe Penders @quijolemano.

We are looking forward to having Literacy Through Photography available in Spanish by March 🙌

We hope this is only the beginning of our journey to reach students across various origins and backgrounds.
