You are invited to the second Great Books Seminar of the semester on Monday, November 14th, from 5:30-7pm in room 212J of the Honors College.

The main reading for this discussion will be a short, but famous section in Dostoyevsky’s monumental novel The Brothers Karamavoz, known as “The Grand Inquisitor” (18 pgs). This tale — told by Ivan K., who doubts the existence of a benevolent personal diety, to his young brother Alyosha K., who has recently taken religious orders as a novice — confronts us with one of the most powerful and troubling accounts of human nature, freedom, and divine providence in modern literature.

As essential background for the Inquisitors interrogation of Christ, we’ll also look at a few verses from the Gospel of Matthew (4-7); as well as an optional reading, a short story, “The Star” by Arthur Clarke.

Please join us for the discussion – We look forward to seeing you there!

Light refreshments and snacks will be provided.
