Celebrated PA day with some of the BEST PAs out there!

Being a Pediatric Emergency Medicine PA has been incredibly fulfilling and it's honestly it's due to working with incredible people like and 🙌🙌

Though it's not often enough.. our team does try to meet up outside of work ever so often and I have to admit it's a great way to decompress and bond over shared experiences, and also catch up on personal stuff too. Working in medicine can be hard- connecting with those who "get it" can make it better!

👏👏👏Today is PA Day and this week, Oct 6-12 we celebrate PAs!

🎓The PA profession was founded in 1965 when the first class was formed at Duke University Medical Center by Dr Eugene Stead. Since then, hundreds of thousands of PAs have made an impact on healthcare, practicing medicine, treating our patients and expanding access to care.

🙌Our numbers continue to grow- currently there are 168,000 PAs in the US including the District of Columbia. Thousands of Pre-PAs apply for those coveted seats. There are currently 293 (277 last year) accredited PA programs and many practicing PAs have continued their education to get a Doctoral Degree.

✅ Be proud of our profession and share your excitement… as a practicing PA, PA student, or a pre-PA.. talk about the profession, share our history and impact. Use the hashtag , follow your state PA association (shoutout to my home state ) and and see what’s happening in our world this week!

This month I have been thankful to be a clinical preceptor for a 2nd year PA student, Jillian () 🙌

Way back before the plague.. when I still took Pre-PA students (I don't right now) she'd reached out through social media and asked if she could shadow, and ended up shadowing me for a few shifts.

Fast forward to now, when she is a PA student in my department, seeing patients and doing procedures with me (and our other PA/NP colleagues!). I might have even forced her to take a gowned up selfie in the trauma room while we waited for the helicopter to land 😘 No PA students were harmed during photography, I promise.

It's been fun to see her progression- and a reminder of how important it is to help pre-PAs.

I don't have the bandwidth to mentor Pre-PAs directly anymore- but do have all of our virtual shadowing events recorded (over 40 hours!) there is a link in bio for those interested! Many students use them on their applications.. and while virtual shadowing isn't a replacement for in person shadowing, it's a great adjunct, and a great way to learn about the profession, and how PAs serve in so many specialties (Peds EM, ortho, psych, general ER, surgery, urology... the list is pretty long!)

👏Big thanks to for having me this week! I presented "Emergency Management of Pediatric Sepsis" at their annual conference this week and really enjoyed it!

🗣️This was my 6th of 7 presentations this year and did not disappoint! It was also fun to see the my amazing PA friends up there too!

🌴I've been a member of FAPA for years but this was the first time I presented anything- and I can say as a speaker I felt welcomed and loved their amazing set up.. they really know how to put on a solid conference. (And specific thanks to and for being so helpful!)

📸Also- I know this is random but I am SO grateful for the professional photos they took.. I know I'm new to speaking but this was the first conference to do so an it's something I wish more conferences did. Friends will take picture in the audience which is so nice but just not the same.

🧐 Did you know that you do NOT always need to be a member to speak at a state PA conference? They will bring in expert PAs from other states to speak! This means there are a minimum 50 PA associations (plus AAPA) to consider if you ever thought about travelling to speak.

Have you ever considered speaking at a conference? What's been holding you back?

🌱Wellness means paying attention to your needs and honoring them. As clinicians we are "on" almost all the time- clinical work or nonclinical work, professional growth.. you name it, but our hustle game is STRONG 🙌

🔥For me, the past few months have been full of professional highs- lots of presentations and conferences, and it's been amazing! While I've truly enjoyed the time, I am starting to recognize I need some time off - to reset and stay off of social media for a bit.

❤️There are some personal reasons too- but the point is that RECOGNIZING and honoring your own needs is so incredibly important.

🌴So- here's to July- hopefully it will be full of sleeping in, connecting with loved ones and getting outside!

❤️I hope this inspires you to take a break from social media (and work if possible!).

See you all in August!

🥰Thankful to for the invite to speak in their leadership track about how PA/NPs can use strategic visibility to advance their career! I also loved being a part of the more intimate speaker panel session as well!

❤️I also really enjoyed meeting CV surgery PAs and NPs at the Gala! What a beautiful event, and such a great place for PAs in the field, and learned quickly that I had NO idea was so diverse and included providers in and out of the OR. Honestly, even though it wasn't my specialty, they made me feel right at home and it was truly a great time. I also loved meeting APACVS president .c who is also the FIRST woman to be president of their group and is EMPOWERING women in the field every step of the way🙌!

😘I was also so glad to get to see and present after my girl who delivered an awesome presentation on how to use data in leadership.

♥️Also total side note but the hands on workshops at this event looked incredible and included a 2 day critical care bootcamp for ICU skills including "central lines, arterial lines, airway management and intubation, impella and mechanical circulatory support management and patient scenarios". It was very sought after for many new grads and new to the specialty. I think I would attend just for the hands on learning!

✅If you are looking at working in cardiac, vascular, thoracic critical care and/or surgical fields- this is a conference you should absolutely consider going to!

I'm excited to be presenting about using strategic visibility to advance your career during the leadership track at this Thursday!

This is my 5th conference presentation this year! The topic is one of my FAVORITE things to discuss, so hopefully people find it helpful and useful!

If you will be there, stop by and say hello!

SO👏MUCH👏FUN👏.

very first PA night out was hands down, the highlight of the conference. and did an amazing job organizing this- they shut down SIX of the main Nashville Broadway bars, 😂just for us- and it was literally wall to wall PAs and future PAs.

There was a small fee for those of us who were speakers at the conference, and initially I wasn't sold, but honestly it was ABSOLUTELY worth it.

🥳 We ate and drank and sang and danced the night away with friends and colleagues- and to be honest it was nice just to cut loose and enjoy being surrounded with like minded people who "get it".

I was also so happy to hang with my people! Especially my AAPA roomie as well as getting to hang out with and get to briefly run into and .marie_ and SO many others

❤️I've said it before, but our profession is very unique and many times is not well understood- it was SO COOL to be dancing and singing and going up to a bar with thousands of other colleagues who know exactly what the role of a PA is.

🙌Well done to the groups that organized this outing. I would love to see something similar in Houston for AAPA 2024! 😘
