🔶 August 31 - The Honourable Zoni of the Most Holy Theotokos ➰🔶
Today, we commemorate the Holy Zoni (“Belt”) of the Mother of God. This holy relic - which girdled the blessed womb of the Most Holy Theotokos - is the only heirloom that has been preserved from her earthly life, and has performed innumerable miracles. It is kept today at the Great Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. According to Holy Tradition, three days after her repose, the Most Holy Theotokos ascended to the heavens.
As she ascended, she gave her honourable Zoni to the Apostle Thomas, entrusting him with this relic as confirmation of her continuing intercession for the faithful. This belt was woven by the blessed Virgin herself from camel hair. The holy relic was kept in Jerusalem by Christians until the reign of the emperor Arkadios (395-408) when it was brought to Constantinople and placed in the Church of Theotokos Chalkoprateia. More than 400 years later, emperor Leo the Wise (886-912) opened the Holy Coffin (the case containing the Zoni) in order to heal his wife Zoe who was disturbed by an unclean spirit.
The Patriarch placed the Zoni on the sick empress, and immediately she was freed from her infirmity. The Zoni was then placed back in its reliquary which was resealed. In the 12th century during the reign emperor Manuel I Komnenos, an official feast day for the Zoni was established on August 31st, the day on which it was transferred to the Blachernae Church. Over time, the Honorable Zoni was divided into portions and distributed throughout the shrines of Constantinople.
After the Sack of Constantinople in 1204, portions were taken by Latin Crusaders to the West. There are several traditions which claim how the contemporary portion came to the Vatopedi Monastery. According to one tradition, in the 12th century, the emperor Isaac, seeking the divine protection of his army, took a portion of the holy Zoni into a battle against the Bulgarians. Having lost the battle, the Zoni was taken by the Bulgarians, but after Saint Lazarus the Prince of Serbia defeated the Bulgarians in a battle, he recovered the Honorable Zoni and gifted it to the Vatopedi Monastery.
