Texas Summer Meal Program

Texas children have access to healthy meals during the summer provided by participating school and community organizations in partnership with the Texas Department of Agriculture. Children 18 and younger and enrolled students with disabilities up to age 21 in low-income areas can eat healthy meals at no cost through the Summer Meal Program. Locations are supervised and welcoming, often offering fun activities with the meal. Families can use these tools to find nearby meal sites ─ visit SummerFood.org or call 2-1-1. Registration or ID is not required. Summer Meal Programs are funded by the USDA and brought to you by the Texas Department of Agriculture and Commissioner Sid Miller.

How many parents know they can say “no” to a special education evaluation or services until they fully understand what they are consenting to?

😊Most parents know their rights
👍 Some parents know their rights
😮 Very few parents know their rights
📚 I learned something new today

Many parents are never told that consent is voluntary and that they have the right to ask questions, request clarification, and fully understand what they are agreeing to before signing.

Saying “no” does not mean you are being disrespectful, difficult, uncooperative, or against services. It simply means you need more information to make an informed decision for your child.

Parents and schools should work together as partners, and informed consent helps ensure decisions are made in the best interest of the child. 💙

👇 What is one thing you wish schools explained more clearly about parent rights?

Hello Everyone,
You are invited to attend our webinar, “Strategies to Strengthen Parent Voice at ARD Meetings,” on June 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Central Time.

This webinar provides an overview of the Supreme Court case Endrew F. and how the court’s ruling impacts special education services and expectations for students with disabilities. Participants will learn how the decision affects the development of high-quality IEPs and meaningful educational progress.

The workshop will also focus on practical strategies families can use to strengthen their participation during ARD meetings and advocate effectively for their child’s educational needs. Parents will gain a better understanding of how to actively participate in the development of their child’s IEP and how to ensure their concerns and input are addressed during the ARD process.

🌟 Transition Thursday 🌟

📖 Transition Law: Transition Goals Must Be Measurable
Under IDEA §300.320(b), transition goals in the IEP must be measurable. This means the goals should clearly describe what the student plans to do after high school and how progress can be tracked. Goals should be specific and meaningful for the student’s future in education, employment, or independent living.

📈 Clear goals help students move toward a successful future with purpose and direction.

🌟 Transition Thursday 🌟

🧩 Transition Law: Related Services May Continue During Transition Planning
Under IDEA §300.34, students may continue receiving related services during transition planning if those services help support their postsecondary goals. Related services can include speech therapy, counseling, transportation, occupational therapy, or other supports needed for the student to benefit from special education and prepare for adult life.

🚗 Transition planning is not just about graduation — it’s about making sure students have the supports needed for success afterward.
