DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine owns one of the great legacies in surgery. The outstanding surgeons and faculty of the Department—more than one hundred eighty in all—remain dedicated to advancing that legacy in the arenas of patient care, biomedical research, and medical education. We practice at iconic institutions across the campus of the Texas Medical Center (TMC), the largest health science center in the world, including Texas Children’s Hospital, the Texas Heart Institute, St. DeBakey VA Medical Center, and at affiliated institutions throughout the Houston community and beyond.

The Lung Institute at Baylor College of Medicine has now cared for over 1,000 patients through the Post COVID Care Clinic. Led by Dr. Fidaa Shaib, the clinic provides multidisciplinary care for patients experiencing persistent and complex symptoms following COVID-19, with a focus on recovery, symptom management, and improving function and quality of life.
This milestone reflects the continued need for specialized Long COVID care and the commitment of our clinicians and staff to advancing treatment for patients living with its long-term effects. We thank our patients, families, clinicians, and staff for helping us reach this milestone.

Congratulations to Eddie Suarez, M.D., on completing his 32nd heart-lung transplant in Houston, a significant milestone in advanced cardiothoracic transplantation. Dr. Suarez, an internationally recognized cardiothoracic and transplant surgeon, serves as Director of Cardiothoracic Transplantation at the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center Transplant Institute and cardiothoracic surgeon Baylor College of Medicine. His work continues to expand access to complex heart and lung transplantation for patients with advanced heart and lung diseases.
This milestone also reflects the expertise and collaboration of the multidisciplinary teams, patients and families who make these lifesaving procedures possible.

After living for decades with a rare inherited heart condition that progressed to advanced heart failure, international musician and restaurateur Vlado Kolenic received a heart transplant at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center.
His care team included Ajith Nair, M.D., Baylor Medicine cardiologist, and Alexis Shafii, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon at Baylor medicine and surgical director of heart transplantation at Baylor St. Luke’s. Today, Kolenic is back on his feet and making music again.

Under the leadership of Kidney Transplant Surgical Director Dr. Vidya Fleetwood, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine, reached a historic milestone in 2025 with 153 kidney transplants, the highest annual total since the program began in 1988.
The achievement surpassed the previous record of 150 transplants set in 2019 and reflects nearly four decades of dedication to advancing transplant care, improving outcomes and transforming lives.
Dr. Fleetwood joined the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery from Saint Louis University in 2025 and serves as an associate professor of surgery. This milestone also reflects the extraordinary collaboration of the surgeons, nephrologists, APPs, nurses, coordinators, pharmacists, social workers, administrative teams and health system partners who support each patient throughout the transplant journey.

Congratulations to Dr. Ramiro Fernandez on his promotion to Associate Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Since joining Baylor College of Medicine in 2023, Dr. Fernandez has become an integral part of the lung transplant program and has participated as a primary surgeon in nearly 200 lung transplants at Baylor. His work extends beyond the operating room, with a focus on improving postoperative outcomes, expanding access to transplantation and advancing research in primary graft dysfunction and ex vivo lung perfusion.
In his new leadership role, Dr. Fernandez will continue helping advance clinical care, research and innovation for patients with advanced lung disease.

Within the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, residents and fellows learn alongside experienced faculty as they build the knowledge, judgment and technical skills needed to care for patients with complex surgical conditions.
