๐ ๐ ๐ This is a ANOTHER Big one.....๐As๐For๐A ๐Draft ๐IEP ๐
As I wrote in the slide (trying to see if this is easier way to share the full message...not sure if people actually read captions).
The IEP itself is a long, dense, foreign document that will be presented to you by committee members speed-reading/summarizing in the meeting. You want to have your questions ready ahead of time.
Also, you can ALWAYS reschedule the meeting if you need more time. If they get the draft to you too late, or if you decide last minute that you need someone to help you decipher it....just move the date.

I don't care how well you think you know your child, their rights, or the special education process....this is an EMOTIONAL journey! Nobody can be expected to be operating at full capacity when it comes to their child.
Walking into that meeting room is intimidating, and things move quickly with A LOT of information to get through.
I'm not saying that anyone is "out to get you" but things will get missed just due to your own headspace. I don't go by myself for my own child either! Even if it's a friend who knows nothing about your kid, but is there to support you and be an extra set of ears or take notes, just don't go alone!

โจโค๏ธ It is "ARD meeting" time of year here in Texas (IEP meetings for the rest of the country), and I know that there is a tendency for that "Mama Bear" to come out of hibernation the second we receive that meeting invitation.
However, I just want to remind everyone that the meetings come from laws that were put in place to PROTECT the students. Kids with IEPs need a "village," and that ARD Committee table is full of specially trained individuals who are uniquely suited to help your student.
If we work TOGETHER, and use the laws as tools instead of weapons, then the students are the ones who benefit.
So, maybe START with an open mind, and put defensive walls down when you sit at the table. Remember who matters, and try to work together to help your student.
Also, NEVER go alone to the meeting...If you need an Advocate, reach out to me for a FREE Consultation๐

โจ Current research shows that Dyslexia affects 20 percent of the population and represents 80โ90 percent of all those with learning disabilities. It is THE most common of all neuro-cognitive disorders, yet so many people still consider it a stigma. There are no correlations between intelligence and dyslexia, and many of the greatest minds in History are/were dyslexic.
There are MANY evidence-based reading interventions and accommodations that can be used to help the dyslexic brain with reading. The earlier they are used, the faster a student can be taught to read, and the less chance of emotional damage when unable to keep up with peers.

โพ๏ธโจโค๏ธ Wow! If our brains are as unique as our fingerprints...that means no two are alike! Therefore, is it any wonder that our kids are having problems in school when we are asking them all to learn the same way, and assess them with the same tests?

โจโพ๏ธโจDr. Temple Grandin is a Professor, a best-selling author, an autistic self-advocate, and an internationally outspoken proponent of autism rights and neurodiversity movements. She has been named one of "Time" magazine's most influential minds in the world in their "Heroes" category. And she speaks around the world about the problems with focusing on deficits versus strengths in a child.
We need to stop focusing on what a student CAN'T do and instead celebrate the things they CAN!!โจโพ๏ธโจ

๐This is pretty much the number one most important rule when it comes to Special Education services in public schools. Not that anyone is intentionally trying to prevent students from getting their services, but things get requested, promised, and discussed all the time....and then don't ever happen if there is no paper trail for accountability. Timing is also SUCH a huge piece of the law when it comes to getting needs met for students, and when there is a clear record of the steps completed along the way, it will always be better for the child, and probably better for all parties involved.

โจ While the numbers of children diagnosed with ASD are higher than ever, it is not known whether this is due to broader definition and better diagnostic tools, or actual increase in numbers...but probably a combination of both. Either way, the bottom line is that you probably know and may love someone with autism. Every single person on the planet is unique, and autism spectrum is just another part of some of what makes some people who they are. Man what a boring world it would be if we were all the same!๐ฅฐ

If you have a Texas student with a disability (known or suspected) join Group "EmpowerED HTX"
๐๐This isn't technically "new" news, but when it comes to Special Education Services...we don't know what we don't know...and MANY parents do not know that as of Sept 2023, an identification of Dyslexia is now considered a "Specific Learning Disability" making it an eligibility for an IEP!
So, parents, if you have a 504 accommodations plan, you can ask for a Full Individual Evaluation (FIE) from your school and start making actual GOALS that hold your school accountable for MEANINGFUL PROGRESS!

โญNot only CAN every student learn, but children actually WANT to learn. We are all born naturally curious about the world....the hard part is keeping that curiosity alive in the school setting. The IEP process gives us a whole TEAM of adults (including parents) who know our kids in different ways...and if they work collaboratively, they can figure out the best way to keep each student engaged..."ideally." โค๏ธ

๐๐ It is about to be freezing in Houston, and we are all stuck inside for a long weekend. Take this time to pull out those IEP Goals and jot down what you from your point of view, and then send a quick email to your IEP team to collect the post holiday break data. This is ONE way you can document the need for ESY over the summer.
