A Public Health Summer is coming to an end! This summer, healthcare management student Natalia Nassar interned under the Houston Methodist Hospital's Operations program.

"This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Houston Methodist, working across two departments: Platinum Patient Services and the Access and Throughput Center. Throughout my internship, I led a variety of projects, including developing an employee recognition portal, conducting a national benchmarking initiative, analyzing HCAHPS performance and best practices, and collaborating with several departments to redesign the postmortem process."

Alumna Wendy Nembhard, PhD, MPH, FACE, FAHA, has been named dean of the UAMS Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, where she has served as professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology.

Nembhard, who earned her MPH in 1997 and PhD in 2000 from UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, has built a distinguished career as an epidemiologist, researcher, and academic leader. Her appointment as dean, effective September 1, marks the latest chapter in a career dedicated to advancing public health, improving health outcomes, and addressing health disparities.

School of Public Health students traveled to Capitol Hill!

School of Public Health students accepted into the Graduate Archer Fellowship program completed their summer semester in the nation's capital and worked across congressional offices, federal departments, and policy think tanks, contributing to real-time public policy efforts while deepening their understanding of complex national and global issues. By pairing academic coursework with hands-on professional engagement, students are prepared to drive change.

Yun Hang, PhD, has been selected for a NASA-funded project aimed at enhancing drinking water resilience along the U.S.-Mexico border. This project, which began in June 2026, marks the first time NASA has assembled a water quality applications team, bringing together the expertise of 11 research scientists from across the country.

“Drinking water is one of the most fundamental public health protections, but producing safe drinking water involves a delicate balance,” said Hang.

MPH student Jacqueline Foss brought “A Public Health Summer” to Uganda as she completed her Global Health Experiential Fellowship with Empower Through Health, which brings together students from U.S. and Ugandan universities to collaborate on community-engaged global health research.

“This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to spend 6 weeks in Uganda working with an organization called Empower Through Health. I spent 4 weeks working alongside Ugandan and American colleagues, contributing to a mixed‑methods study examining the first 90 days after antipsychotic initiation among adults with severe mental illness in rural Eastern Uganda. I then completed a placement in Jinja Regional Referral Hospital through ETH’s Shared Clinical Learning program, focused on understanding healthcare delivery and system constraints within the Ugandan healthcare system. This experience changed my life, and I feel immense gratitude for everything I learned from my peers in Uganda and ETH!”

"A Public Health Summer" traveled to Alaska, where assistant professor Juan Aguilera Mendoza, MD, PhD, is studying under the ASPIRE Immersive Institute.

"This summer, I am participating in the NSF-funded ASPIRE Immersive Institute in Juneau, Alaska, where I am learning from the Sealaska Heritage Institute and other community-engaged researchers about culturally grounded, place-based research. I am bringing these lessons back to my public health work along the U.S.–Mexico border, with a focus on building more reciprocal, sustainable, and community-directed partnerships."
