This is the first in a series to help LPISD families and neighbors understand the VATRE on the November 3 ballot.

A VATRE is a voter-approval tax rate election. It is not a bond. Proposition A would fund day-to-day operations — teachers, programs, and campus needs — without adding debt.

Five things to know: one of the lowest rates in the region, less than $5 a year for an average homeowner, no increase for homeowners 65+, $175K and under pay $0 in school taxes, and about 90% of LPISD taxes come from local industry.

Dear La Porte ISD Families and Staff,

La Porte ISD will return to a regular school schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 2 as the inclement weather has moved out of our immediate area.
Canceling a school day is never an easy decision, but the safety of our students and staff must always come first. In the case of Tropical Storm Edouard, the La Porte area has been fortunate to avoid the flooding conditions that had been forecast. While the weather ultimately did not unfold as widely anticipated, the decision to cancel school was made based on the information and forecasts available at the time, with student and staff safety as the guiding consideration.

A great deal goes into the decision to cancel school because of weather. La Porte ISD subscribes to a specialized weather service that provides information and guidance to help school districts and municipalities assess potentially hazardous conditions. When severe weather is approaching, superintendents from across the Greater Houston region also participate in regular briefings with emergency operations officials and meteorologists to assess the potential risks and determine appropriate action. In this case, those discussions began Monday afternoon and continued with another briefing at 4 a.m. Tuesday, just before the final decision was made to cancel school and notify stakeholders.

If there is one lesson this experience has brought to the forefront once again, it is the importance of expecting the unexpected. Weather forecasting is just that — a prediction based on the best information and data available at the time, and conditions can change quickly.

La Porte ISD will continue to place the safety of our students and staff at the top of our priority list. We are grateful for your grace, patience and understanding as we navigate this and future weather situations. As always, if you have questions or concerns, we are happy to address them.

***WEATHER UPDATE***

After consulting with meteorologists early this morning and out of an abundance of caution, La Porte ISD will be closed today, Tuesday, Sept. 1, due to the potential for local flooding and hazardous road conditions later in the day.

We will continue to monitor conditions and consult regularly with area meteorologists and will provide updates as needed.

Please avoid unnecessary travel, use caution if you must be on the roads, and never drive through flooded roadways. Most importantly, please stay safe and take care of yourselves and your families.
