With the 2020 Presidential Election Now History, our kids will still have questions. As a public school teacher, I teach Social Studies, and not a day has gone by where they didn’t wanna discuss the election. I usually stay neutral and let them debate among themselves. They usually don’t agree with each other. So, I just let them know how our long standing Democracy works. I mediate and keep them on tract to a healthy understanding.
So, if you have school aged Children don’t tell them to just “shut up and stop asking questions”. That won’t settle the issue. As a Coach/Consultant, I try to discuss with them about how the process works and how valuing the opinion of others is priceless. Finally, this is a good way to discuss, in a Civil way, with your Children the specifics of difficult issues. Realistically, This won’t be the last time that they encounter difficult issues. “Remember Sharing the Truth and being open to your Children’s opinion will teach them how to deal with difficult topics in their lives in the future”. Think About it!

Under our current restrictions with the COVID-19 Virus raging, schools may be shut down for many more weeks. So, as Parents of school age Children you may want to plan for the long hall.
One consideration is to think about how to help your kids with online school assignments.
Contrary to popular belief not all parents have the luxury of staying home to help their students. They have to work.
If that’s you, and If your kids are Elementary or Middle School age, you may want to pay an older relative or friend to stay at your home during school days to act as a guide or helper to your students. This will be much better than letting your kids get behind in their academic progress. Think about it!

Have you as a parent found it frustrating to find yourself as the teacher of your Child during this time of Coronavirus shutdowns and school closures? Now it’s easy to see what teachers do daily and how frustrating teaching the young can be. However, don’t give up. Things will get much better. Even if schools don’t reopen soon, you will become the expert at teaching your child. Schools are sending lessons to students via internet platforms and in other ways for students to continue learning. This is good, but parents now become not only tutors but also teacher for these new lessons. It’s not easy but doable.
First, start in the beginning establishing a consistent routine for your child. This involves getting them out of bed early, either at the normal time they get up during school days or close to that time. Do Not allow them to sleep all day. Make sure they do class work and check on them throughout the day. However, many parents work, so it’s important to plan a routine close to real school days as possible. Secondly, do not criticize your child if they don’t understand assignments nor let yourself get frustrated. Some of today’s school curriculum can be challenging. So, when you can, utilize your point of contact for the school. They will guide you. Finally, stay tuned to this page for further help or contact me via email, Facebook, or by calling. “You can do this”.

With the Coronavirus fears at a pitch level, many schools are on high alert and rightfully should be too. In my 28 years in public schools as a teacher I have never witnessed such a high level of fear. Thus, Parents and Teachers must teach students to follow proper hand washing and other cleanliness procedures to rid themselves of germs. This Will at least cut chances of contracting Coronavirus.
I would suggest that parents reassure children that things will settle down. Most importantly, this approach does lessen or minimize the seriousness of this pandemic. But, it offers them assurance that as Long as they follow effective hygiene they should be ok.

With this COVID-19 virus wrecking havoc on our Country Schools are not spared. As you know many schools have been shut down for an extended
Period of time. This not only causes major problems for families and teachers, but the Corona virus is causing many issues for the school establishment (State agencies, local Districts, and others).
So, while we’re in sort of an imposed isolation, Parents have to plan to help teach their Children at home. One major thing is to set a “school schedule” each day as a routine. This will keep kids in a study frame of mind.
Also, as schools send either study packs or Chromebook laptops home with each child it’s important that parents learn a little about the technology. Kids know way more than adults, but if parents learn the basics kids will not dare use the computers for games and not complete online assignments. Finally, be patient as we as a country work through this situation. Schools and others are doing their best during this unprecedented situation. “Trust that God is working this out”.

Repost: Never be fast to say your Child didn’t say that:
When I served as an Assistant Principal over 12 years, I was Always Surprised by some Parents who acted Surprised when I told them their Child had Cussed out a teacher, and that their action was the reason for 3 days of out is school suspension. Then after talking for a while the parent would let it slip that the Child had Cussed them out too. Well, apples never fall to far from the tree, so to speak. If the Child would cuss the parent out what do you expect she will do outside of their presence.
The key is for parents to know their children well enough to admit what they are capable of doing or saying. Furthermore, Schools can help solve a lot of issues with kids if Parents and Teachers work together on one accord. Schools are just an extension of the Family, and Families are a microcosm of society in general. Thus, teachers and parents can work together to help create a better society. Just Remember: “Together We Can Create a Better Child”.

Special Education Alert:
It is nearing the start of the school year for many, many Secondary Special Education students (and younger students). With this, parents must prepare to attend ARD (Admission Review and Dismissal) meetings, partner with new teachers, and deal with schedule changes. Special Ed. students are often bewildered when school starts because they have new teachers, new classrooms, or new schools to deal with. This can be overwhelming.
However, there are some precautions that parents can take to ease the transition and help their child have a successful school year. First, parents can prepare their student by making sure they talk with their child about changes that they may face. Secondly, Parents can also call the school to get a list of their child’s classes, new classrooms, and new teachers. This can be used to orientate their child regarding their order and location of classes. Thirdly, parents should try to schedule a time that they can go to the school to walk the student to each room area before the new year. This can be done by calling the school’s principal or assistant principal in Before school starts to get an appointment (schedules should be prepared for the next year by then). The positive outcome could ease the transition. Finally, from my experiences as an administrator I’ve seen lots of students who report to school without this orientation take days to find the right teacher and classrooms. If these precautions are followed parents will sleep well at the start of the school year. “Be Conscientious for Success”.

NOW it’s time to think about the new school year that is swiftly arriving. It’s time to think about buying school supplies, school footwear, other items such as appropriate school clothes, AND paying for school Lunches. I remember growing up with seven other siblings in my family. So, buying clothes and paying for school lunches for eight kids was the tricky part. My Mother would frequent rummage sales and other secondhand venues. Also, we would run home for lunch or charge our lunch until pay day. We didn’t Complain because we knew my parents had a hard time making ends meet. My Mother quit school in 11th grade and was the “Help”or the “Maid” for a well to do family. My Dad only made it to Third grade before quitting school to work on a neighborhood farm. So, we just made things work.
However, paying the lunch bill took a “big chuck” out of my parents small pay checks. Unlike today where schools are practicing “Lunch Shaming” (article attached), the schools waited until we could pay. However, if the bill couldn’t be paid after a while, We just went without lunch. However, many of my friends got Free Lunch, but at $75 and $35 weekly salaries by my Dad and Mom respectively, we didn’t qualify. Thus, I advise parents to plan your child’s lunches accordingly. Make sure they eat breakfast and have access to lunch. “Remember, Lunch Matters”

Have a Piece for Of Mind:
It is the summer vacation period for nearly All Public schools in American. As a Parent or Guardian of School age Children, it’s the best time to prepare them for the next school year. Oh they will murmur and complain that school is out and no learning should take place, but that is just a front.
Most kids enjoy enhancements to learning. They will especially love it when they are ahead of others when school starts up again. During this time, take them to libraries, museums, and other places where you can learn with them. If they see you actively involved they will be more enthusiastic with learning during Summer Break. Remember “Learning can be fun and never take Summer Breaks”.
