On February 26, 2026, Director General Hsiao I-Fang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office delivered a compelling speech on how Taiwan, ROC, stands strong and the work TECO continues to advance with the support of friends of Taiwan and Taiwanese communities worldwide.
The event was hosted by Dr. Yao-Yuan Yeh, Director of the Taiwan & East Asia Studies Program. Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. John Palasota, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of St. Thomas.
More than 50 attendees were present, including Sister Cities of Houston President James Post and Secretary Anna Post. The audience expressed strong appreciation for the rich and informative content of the lecture and actively participated in a lively Q&A session.
Director General Hsiao highlighted Taiwan’s global leadership in areas such as democracy and freedom, technological innovation, healthcare, and quality of life. She also explained in clear and accessible terms how China has sought to limit Taiwan’s international participation, conducted gray-zone harassment, and even threatened the personal safety of Taiwan’s government officials and elected representatives. In addition, she emphasized the Taiwanese government’s determination to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and its commitment to working closely with like-minded international partners to maintain regional peace and stability.
