This is a real text message my former boss sent me in November 2018, about 15 minutes after I told him I wouldn’t be coming in for my shift that day. It was the first—and only—time I’ve ever quit a job.

I was 17 at the time. I had just exited the foster care system, lost contact with my social worker, and was living completely on my own. I was working part-time as a grocery store cashier while applying to college as a full-time highschool student, and I depended on that paycheck to afford rent and basic necessities.

I made the decision to leave after reporting my manager to corporate for behavior I felt was discriminatory towards my coworkers, many of whom did not speak fluent English. At that point, I knew I couldn’t continue working in an environment that didn’t align with my values. I later learned he was removed from his position.

Even so, his words stayed with me. At a time when I was already focused on survival and trying to build a future for myself, they planted real doubt. I questioned whether I would make it to college, graduate on time, or even stay financially stable in the months ahead.

But that moment didn’t define the outcome.

My faith and persistence carried me through a season that felt uncertain and overwhelming. Over time, I began to understand that someone else’s words, especially when rooted in ignorance or frustration, do not determine your capacity or your future.

Today, I’m grateful for the opportunity to train as a future physician: to serve patients with dignity, to advocate for those who may feel unseen, and to be part of a profession built on care, respect, and trust.

I want to be clear: I’m not sharing this to call out or invite negativity toward any individual or workplace. People say things in moments they may not fully understand. I’m sharing this because I know there are others who have been told, directly or indirectly, that they don’t belong in certain spaces.

If that’s you, let this be your reminder: your circumstances, your setbacks, and other people’s words do not define what you are capable of becoming.

Keep going. There is still so much ahead of you ☁️✨
