Happy 156th Birthday to Dr. Montessori! Her trailblazing study of human development became the global movement for peace through education that we continue at St. Catherine’s each day.

Time in nature is an integral part of a Montessori education. Already, students across campus are finding their rhythm connecting with nature through purposeful work.

The Adolescent Community visited the pond they built at Japhet Campus last year, taking in the fruits of their own labor and making plans for the year ahead. In Primary, children find meaningful work in tending to plants indoors and in the outdoor environment.

Stewardship of the natural world begins in the earliest years and becomes a lifelong foundation for wonder and ecological living.

The human tendency for orientation is extra visible in the early days of the academic year. Primary and Infant Community families participated in our annual “Looking Day” to walk with their children through their new learning environments before beginning their daily school routine. Lower Elementary students orient themselves to the routines and procedures of their communities, including where and how to do their classroom laundry each day. High School students toured a textile recycling factory, orienting to community partners that will support their learning this year.

During her lifetime, Dr. Montessori observed and documented universal human tendencies, which are present in all people across all ages, all cultures, and all times. Orientation is the tendency that drives people to find their place and establish reference points in their environment. In keeping with Montessori’s scientific pedagogy, St. Catherine’s strives to provide age-appropriate opportunities to express these innate tendencies each day!

Happy 60th first day of school at St. Catherine’s Montessori! It is our profound delight to welcome students back to campus for another year of learning and growing. What started in 1966 as a single Primary class in the Holy Rosary parish hall has grown into the first school in the United States to offer a continuous AMI education from infancy through high school graduation.

From the Senior Sunrise breakfast and labyrinth walk to elementary classroom orientation and community building, the return of students brings life to our prepared environments!

This morning, faculty and staff took a prayerful walk around campus to bless each learning environment, office, and community space for another year of service to our student body. As guides put finishing touches on their prepared environments, we are eager to welcome new and returning families and students to campus in the coming days.
