Marcus Johnson was born in Denver, Colorado just four minutes after his twin brother, Stacey. He was intellectually curious and an eternal optimist.
Marcus attended elementary school at Iowa Elementary School before moving to Houston with his parents and brother when he was nine years old. He later attended CyFair High School where he thrived academically and participated in football, track and cross-country. A National Merit Scholar, he chose to pursue his degree at Texas A&M University, where he was a Presidents Endowed Scholarship recipient
. Marcus was a natural born leader who explored life with childlike wonderment. Marcus loved language acquisition, reading, music, art, sports and spending time with his friends, family and his dog, Leo. On December 1st of 2023, Marcus lost his life in a car accident while traveling back to College Station after Thanksgiving weekend. His untimely departure has given us all pause and we have chosen to remember him in many special ways. Establishing the Marcus Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund seemed like a befitting way to honor Marcus' life. Marcus would have found great joy in knowing that his memory could positively impact young men and women. The Marcus Johnson Memorial Scholarship Award will be distributed to one Texas A&M bound KIPP graduate each year who is selecctef based on their character, leadership, and academic merit. Each year on the anniversary of Marcus’ untimely departure, we invite you to join us in honoring Marcus’ memory. The Johnson Family wishes to acknowledge Sehba Ali of KIPP Texas and Kelly Wright, previously of the KIPP Foundation, for establishing this fund for future scholars. In remembrance, we thank you for your positive vibes and memories of our beloved son. The Johnson Family
