Thelma Scott founded the SAFE Diversity Communities, formerly (BJEC) in December 2000. Scott came to grips with her own hidden disabilities as students at North Harris Lonestar College and her personal challenges of living in a world that lacks compassion and understanding for people who are different with a unique ability. Scott survived breast cancer, spinal injury, memory loss and other illness
es after chemotherapy, she continued pursuing her college education. Through her own personal journey to triumph and willingness to beat the odds after becoming a Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (D.A.R.S) consumer, but despite being stigmatized and bullying due to the hatred she has exhumed in society for the last 17 years as SAFE/BJE Founder/CEO. Scott, phenomenal success story as a D.A.R.S consumer and a disability advocate, she was appointed by the Governor’s Office to serve on the Statewide Governor’s DARS RCT Council Board that inspired her to continue advocating and mentoring People with Disabilities. These challenges catapulted her with the vision to make a difference in the lives of students with "Unique Abilities" (and their families) by embracing opportunities, independence and education as productive citizens in their community. Thus, this mind-set will ensure that People with "Unique Abilities" will overcome barriers, live free and enjoy their best quality of life.
