For years I led a team that delivered real results. We brought in visibility, attracted new talent, and raised funding that launched projects nobody thought we could pull off. I managed a multimillion dollar budget and kept us in the black year after year. My team liked the work, and I did everything I could to earn their respect as a leader.

That's the part of the story I could always put on paper.

But there's a part I couldn't. Underneath all of it, I was also doing the "office mom" work. The tasks that feel good in the moment and quietly drain you over time. Cleaning up messes I didn't create. Filling gaps nobody assigned me. Smoothing things over so the team stayed functional. Nobody put that on a scorecard.

Over time it turned into resentment. I was doing double the job and only getting credit for half of it. When advancement season came around, I had a stack of real wins to point to, and an entire second job's worth of effort I couldn't reference at all, because it was never written down anywhere that mattered.

That's the trap. The work that makes you feel needed isn't always the work that makes you promotable. By the time you notice the gap, you've usually been standing in it for years.

If any part of this sounds familiar, the first step isn't doing less. It's seeing clearly what you're actually carrying. That's exactly what I built the "Invisible Work Audit" to do. It's a 5-minute quiz you can take for free to identify where you're draining yourself, and help you create a plan to stop it.

I almost didn't write this book because I thought my story wasn't dramatic enough.

There were just years of quietly underselling myself, staying quiet in rooms I'd earned a seat in, and assuming my work would speak for itself.

It doesn't. I learned that the hard way, and I wrote this book so you can level up too.

At your level, it is not about showing them everything. It is about showing them the right things, clearly, with numbers and outcomes attached.

Two small reminders for a heavy day.

1. "Action is the antidote to anxiety."

I heard Jon Stewart say this on the IMO podcast, and I'm not sure who said it first, but it landed. When life feels like too much, getting up and doing something... productive, meaningful, or even mundane... pulls me out of my head. Maybe I only manage doing one good thing today. Maybe that's all that has to matter right now.

2. "It's hard to hate up close."

Some days the world feels louder and more divided with every news cycle. It's easy to feel like the bad guys are winning, like goodness is getting harder to find. Then I walk into my local coffee shop. A stranger smiles, says 'good morning', and scoots over so I have a little more room to sit. When we go our separate ways, "have a nice day" actually sounds like they mean it.

That small exchange is enough to remind me: we're all just fumbling through this, figuring it out as we go. We wake up hoping for the best, and sometimes we find it. We all just want to feel safe, comfortable, and like we belong.

Maybe if we look up from our screens and spend a little more time in each other's presence, we'll start to really see each other again.

Small moments like these are proof that goodness isn't gone. It's just waiting for us to look up.

In career transitions, focus on what you can control. Quiet the noise on everything else.

Easier said than done, right? Maybe not.

1. START taking score of your impact.
2. STOP doing invisible work (looking at you, "office mom").
3. ALWAYS know your worth before someone else tries to tell your story.

I'll always teach you how to think, so you can take this mindset into everything you do.

Join me Wednesday, August 26th at 7pm Central. We'll set the foundation so you never have to wait for what you deserve again.
