Most if not every one of us has to deal with some kind of budget when it comes to decorating a space. It can become very expensive very quickly so being savvy about where to spend and where to save is crucial to coming out with a great space that doesn't bankrupt you.

Sometimes, I paint on walls.

I needed a blank canvas to test out a mural idea I may be installing in a client's home and Sarah was kind enough to offer up her boring powder room. It was so fun to do, even in a tight space, and I like the soft, ethereal, watercolor vibes it brings in with the nature inspired motif.

Would you let me do this on your walls? 🤔

Answering some questions and tackling some soggy garden tasks after a rainy week here in Houston zone 9b.

This summer might kill me. Who else doesn't know what day it is anymore?

I love caladiums. They do so well here in zone 9b in Houston and hold up to our heat and humidity all summer long. They begin sprouting from the bulb in April and continuing putting out these gorgeous leaves all the way until late fall to early winter. This variety is called "Sweet and Sassy" and I love the dark veigning with the wine toned ombre. Caladiums come back every year for me, although too long in wet ground can rot the bulb. I often grab bulbs from Plants For All Seasons as soon as they come into the nursery around March and pop those in the grouns around last year's bulbs in case. They also do really well in pots and help light up shady spots under awnings and pergolas.

Its been HOT and HUMID in Houston for a while now, reminding me why I usually flee to the mountains up North this time of year. But due to some summertime home projects and work/kids responsibilities we are gutting it out at home. The amount I sweat while watering every day is, frankly, appaling but at least the time spent outdoors has allowed me to appreciate some of the things that are still rocking-on through the summer doldrums.

Zone 9b garden in Houston in July. Not for the faint of heart. If you want to plant these in your hot-weather climate, I advise to wait until the fall. Planting now in the heat of summer will stress your plants and make it hard for root systems to get established.

We moved into this lovely house in a beautiful old neighborhood on a Friday afternoon. On Sunday our new house filled with all our belongings, still sitting in boxes, was under 4 feet of filthy flood water.

We learned a lot. Cried a lot. Sweat a lot. Stressed a lot. And over the next year experienced a powerful lesson about what HOME means and how impactful it is on our lives and well-being.

Its been a while now, and that lesson has stuck, compelling me to help others to understand the power of home and the tool it can be for a more fulfilling, supported, joyous life.

If this resonates with you, follow along. We love to teach and help others diagnose the problems with their spaces and find meaningful, beautiful, and functional solutions so you can live well at home.

This backyard presented a bit of a challenge when our client moved in last fall. The towering neighbor's house felt too close for comfort and offered the inhabitants a poolside show whether they wanted it or not. With an astroturf surround and a narrow space between the fence and the pool, finding a privacy solution seemed daunting to them. But as soon as I said "boutique hotel pool vibes" and showed them what a good bunch of bamboo could do, they were sold. We worked with the Houston Bamboo Nursery to install large raised boxes with drip systems so that the bamboo stays where we want it (no creeping roots) and gets all the water needed to thrive. We opted for the tallest available Gracilis Bamboo for instant impact. The bamboo will throw up more canes and fill out quickly to provide a living wall. I chose bamboo for this spot because of its rapid growth, vertical and compact nature, and its ability to stay evergreen in our climate so that the privacy exists year round.

Its a hot and humid day and I am monitoring the install of a bamboo wall at my client's today and thought I would update her front porch pots with fresh plants for the summer.
