After reading many nonfiction books written for teenagers and adults, I needed a change of pace. The Notebook of Doom to the rescue! Highly recommend the first book in the series, Rise of the Balloon Goons by Troy at Cummings.
Monsters? ✔️
Laugh-out-loud scenes? ✔️
Great for beginning chapter book readers?✔️
As an added bonus, I now laugh whenever I pass those ridiculous inflatable advertisements.
One of my favorite books has been made into an opera for the family. Houston Grand Opera is coming to a few library branches to share the interactive story with some songs to sing along with. Woohoo!!

Just finished Charlie Hernández and the Castle of Bones (the 2nd book in the Charlie Hernández series). This series is full of action and characters from Hispanic legends, folklore, and myths. Great books for 4th grade and up.

Here’s a great series for 1st (with help) to 3rd (and 4th and 5th who need easier books with a story they can relate to). The Anna Wang series follows Anna from a new student in 3rd grade into her middle school experience. It has themes of diversity, friendship, and family. Highly recommend.

Today I finished reading The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate. It’s the story of Ivan’s friend who happens to be a dog. Bob, as the author says, “faces down a lot in this story: tornadoes and owls, floods and wolves, terror and guilt and self-doubt. But through it all, Bob never loses his tiny-mutt swagger.”
I highly recommend both books. They are available from the Harris County Public Library in both electronic and paper versions. There are even some beginning-reader versions of The One and Only Ivan.
Happy reading!
