Cheo didn't set out to become a teacher — his wife saw it in him first. 💙

Now teaching 7th grade History, Cheo credits his wife's encouragement for pointing him toward the classroom. She was convinced he could reach and motivate the kids other teachers couldn't — and she was right.

His path to certification with Teach Us Texas taught him something just as important as content: that teaching is a process, not something you have to have mastered on day one.

Sylvia’s journey to certification started with an email asking if she wanted to get certified — and led her through Teach Us Texas's Reading Academies, where she says she learned to see reading in a whole new way (and even started using what she learned to help her own son).

This fall, she's trading special education reading instruction for her first classroom as a certified kindergarten teacher at Kolda Elementary. Big change — one she's grown to love.

Sylvia spent 15 years behind a news desk before she ever set foot in a classroom. 💛

Born and raised in Corpus Christi, she built a career as a TV news anchor and reporter — until family pulled her toward education. With a husband, sister-in-law, and mother-in-law all teaching, and a son enrolled at the same middle school where she'd eventually work, the signs were everywhere.

It started with a phone call about bus schedules and turned into a long-term substitute position. Now, Sylvia is building her second career — and this year, she's stepping into her first classroom as a certified kindergarten teacher.
