CBS celebrates Juneteenth as a Testimony to Freedom!

Juneteenth is an important date because it commemorates what occured on June 19, 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, more than two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

Why the delay? During the Civil War, many enslavers in Confederate states ignored the proclamation, and Texas, geographically remote and with a low presence of Union troops became the last stronghold of slavery. It wasn't until Union General Gordon Granger arrived with federal forces that emancipation was enforced and publicly announced.

Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021 – honoring not just the delayed freedom of enslaved people in Texas, but also the enduring struggle for justice and the ongoing contributions of Black Americans.
