The Office of Black Student Achievement hosted the 2026 OBSA Youth Summit on April 30 at Metropolitan State University.
Students from five Minneapolis Public high schools came together for a day of leadership, self-care, and connection.
At OBSA, we are committed to creating spaces where Black students feel seen, valued, and empowered.
Thank you to our Youth Leadership Council (YLC), OBSA Kings and Queens, volunteers, and community partners for making this day possible.
Special thanks to Metropolitan State University for hosting and Sammy’s Avenue Eatery for lunch.
Our students matter.

For many, the Atlantic Ocean is a witness. It carries pain and courage. It carries freedom and joy. Today, the Atlantic Ocean was a place of peace, a place to gather, and a place to ask our ancestors to carry us safely on our journey back home to Minnesota.

At the International Civil Rights Museum the group witnessed the original lunch counter, restored and preserved in its historic location.
On February 1, 1960, David Richmond, Frank McCain, Ezell Blair, Jr. (now Jibreel Khazan), and Joseph McNeil, now known as the Greensboro A&T Four — four college freshmen who attended N.C. Agricultural & Technical College — conducted a sit-in at a whites-only lunch counter in Greensboro. Their non-violent direct action challenged America to make good on its promises of equality and civic inclusion enunciated in the Constitution.
This six-month protest, a rare victory in the Civil Rights Movement, would spur a call to action across 13 states and 55 cities — all extending from Greensboro, North Carolina.
