Care of the environment in the Montessori classroom involves purposeful, real-world activities through which children develop responsibility, independence, and respect. By using child-sized tools to sweep, water plants, and organize the environment, children actively maintain their classroom and build a meaningful connection with nature. These experiences foster a strong sense of belonging and purpose that extends beyond the classroom into the wider world. Through Practical Life exercises, children acquire essential life skills while developing concentration, coordination, and a deep appreciation for the world we live in.

Quietly tucked away in Rome’s San Lorenzo district šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹ is the Casa dei Bambini, Maria Montessori’s first school, and it was a treat for a member of our school community to peek inside.

Dr. Montessori’s educational experiment integrated learning experiences directly into housing to support working families and everyday life. Simple didactic materials, child-sized furniture, closeness to home, and access to a garden turned the classroom into a true home away from home, without feeling institutional. Nothing grand. Just thoughtful design and deep respect for learning, families, and child development.

The Golden Beads are a fundamental material, designed to introduce children to the decimal system, place value, and basic mathematical operations. Each individual bead represents a single unit; ten beads form a ten bar; ten bars make a hundred square; and ten squares build a thousand cube. For example, to represent the number 8,423, a child combines eight thousand cubes, four hundred squares, two ten bars and three unit beads. Through these concrete representations of units, tens, hundreds and thousands, children gain an understanding of numerical relationships. By manipulating the beads to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, children develop a solid conceptual foundation for abstract mathematical thinking.

We’re excited to kick off ā€œBook an Adventure Weekā€ with a special treat! šŸ“š Our students were surprised by one of our alumni who read ā€œPete the Cat Plays Ballā€.

The excitement continues all week and will conclude with our annual Halloween Carnival, where our students will dress up as their favorite characters from cherished storybooks. We look forward to seeing their wonderful costumes as they parade into school with big imaginations!
