Did you know that the evolution of Latin and Hispanic heritage has transformed the way we celebrate our cultura in the United States? In 1968, Congress passed a law allowing the President to proclaim the week that includes September 15th and 16th as Hispanic Heritage Week, dedicated to celebrating the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. However, it wasn't until 1988, when Congress amended this law, that the President was officially authorized to establish Hispanic Heritage Month, extending from September 15th to October 15th each year. These dates were selected to coincide with the independence days of various Latin American countries, such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile. Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. recognizes this moment as 𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙘, 𝙇𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙤, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙭 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝, emphasizing the importance of inclusive terminology that reflects our diverse identities in an ever-evolving world. The history of this month and the evolution of our language around it, mirrors the growth, resilience, and unity our community has displayed.

Throughout this month, we'll share a series of content crafted to educate, elevate, and empower our community. We invite YOU to engage with us by sharing how you celebrate your herencia, expressing your identity as Hispanic, Latino, and/or Latinx, and embracing our beautifully diverse cultures. 🌺

Eva is a founding sister of Beta Epsilon Chapter at The University of Houston. She graduated with a Bachelor's in Psychology and a Masters in Social Work. She is currently a Therapist for Legacy Community Health.

Eva is a loving daughter, wife and mother of two. She enjoys spending time with her family and making everyone around her laugh with her infectious humor.

Eva has served in various capacities in our sisterhood and continues to encourage others to be involved.

Who should we spotlight next??

43 years ago, the FIRST INDEPENDENT Latin sorority was founded at Rutgers University. Seeking to create a home away from home for like-minded women, our seven Founding Mothers created Corazones Unidos Siempre Chi Upsilon Sigma Latin Sorority, Inc. 43 years later, our sisterhood continues to educate, elevate, and empower ALL women to break barriers and serve as role models to the community.

For the last 13 years our sisters have joined forces with sisters of Delta Sigma Theta to provide delicious holiday meals, clothes, toiletries and a little bit of joy to our friends at Jackson Hinds Garden Shelter.

All because one woman, Sonya, had a vision. We are so thankful and proud of every sister and friend that has contributed to this amazing cause over the years.
