It’s the best time of year, VAGMO season!

We’re looking for performers, videographers, graphic designers, and writers for this year’s production of Rice’s Critical Approach to The Va**na Monologues!

If you are a person who supports the safety, respect and inclusion of other peoples, this is a great opportunity for you to support inclusionary and intersectional feminism awareness and activism here at Rice. This event will also be completely inclusive to remote students, so don’t let that stop you from being a part of the production! Please consider signing up for any of the roles mentioned above and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact your friendly neighborhood VAGMO directors (Gargi Samarth at [email protected] and Piper Harris at [email protected]).

The Va**na Monologues are a collection of monologues written in 1996 by Eve Ensler to depict the experience of womanhood and femininity and are regularly performed all over the world and at many universities, including Rice. Because the original monologues are not representative of the experience of all women, nonbinary folks, and femme-aligned individuals, at Rice we take a critical approach towards the Va**na Monologues to better represent the diversity of experiences that exist surrounding s*x, gender, and s*xuality.

This year, our performance will be fully virtual and pre-recorded! We hope to have all pieces recorded and submitted by March 27th so we can show the performance the following week.

From Civil Rights to Diss Tracks: How Black Women Have Shaped U.S. Culture 02/08/2021

During this Black History Month, the Rice Women’s Resource Center is excited to celebrate the countless Black womxn, gender minorities, and allies who have made our campus, country, and world a better place. Black feminist theory has a long history in the US and has provided us with critical frameworks, such as intersectionality (Cooper; Crenshaw). These frameworks now guide the RWRC’s approach to advocacy. Now and in the future, we are committed to actively looking for ways to support Rice’s Black community. We have linked a few articles below that provide more information and resources. We are determined to continuously listen to the Black community and improve ourselves as allies.

Do you like theater? Do you want to be involved with a feminist production on campus?

If so, please consider applying to be a director for the Rice Women's Resource Center's Critical Approach to the Va**na Monologues!

Every year, the RWRC puts on a spring production of Eve Ensler's Va**na Monologues. In recent years, we have taken a critical approach to the monologues in order to promote inclusivity and intersectionality.

If you are interested in being one of the Directors of this year's production, please fill out this short application by next Saturday, February 13th: https://forms.gle/LZxVXvdtfxZEXipg8

No prior involvement with the RWRC or Va**na Monologues is required, and we really encourage anybody interested to apply!

CW: Gender-based violence/Anti-trans violence

Today on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we want to take this opportunity to honor trans and gender non-conforming individuals and remember those we have lost. We recognize and mourn the 386 (known) trans or gender non-conforming people who lost their lives to anti-trans violence worldwide within the past year, including 53 from the United States.

The RWRC stands with trans and gender non-conforming folx today and everyday. Anti-trans violence is a persistent and pervasive issue within the United States, as well as many other countries across the world, that we must all take active steps to combat. As an organization dedicated to eliminating all forms of gender-based violence, we encourage you to take these steps together with us:

Anti-violence Project: https://avp.org/
National Center for Transgender Equality: https://transequality.org/

We would also like to highlight the work of gender non-conforming artist Kah Yangni (Instagram: ) in celebrating Transgender Day of Remembrance. We've attached one of their pieces to this post.

Finally, we wanted to say the names of the 53 victims in the US, noting that a majority of them were Black and Latinx trans women.

As LGBTQ+ history month comes to a close, the RWRC would like to take this opportunity to clearly state our commitment to supporting all those who experience gender-based discrimination on our campus and beyond. This is not limited to women; it involves transgender individuals, gender non-conforming individuals, and many more whose identity falls along the spectrum of gender identities. Gender and s*xual minorities have played and continue to serve an integral role in the feminist movement and other social movements, something that often goes unrecognized. The RWRC exists to ensure gender inclusivity and appreciation for all individuals on our campus and in our community, including members of the transgender, GNC, and other gender minority communities. We are committed to learning to be better allies in the years to come.
