We love to see what our PJHC students go on to do after they graduate, so we were so happy to read about Michelle Tran (Class of 2018) and her groundbreaking work with Soar Over Hate in the The New Yorker!
Soar Over Hate is an initiative devoted to gathering resources for the community in the face of escalating anti-Asian violence. What began as a modest GoFundMe page to raise two thousand dollars has, in the time since, become an energetic nonprofit, with more than three hundred volunteers who have collectively equipped tens of thousands of Asian Americans across New York and California with self-defense devices.
Asian American Women Fight Back At a self-defense class in New York after the latest anti-Asian attack, one student said, “I feel like I have an army of sisters.”
Tomorrow evening, Feminist Economics editorial board member and Federal Reserve Board of Governors nominee Lisa Cook will be giving a virtual lecture on how systemic racism contributes to wealth inequality at the University of Houston. There's still time to register for this timely talk!

COVID-19 has made the racial disparities inherent in the American healthcare system all the more evident. While “13% of the population, African Americans account for 25% of COVID-19 deaths where race is known, as of May 2020” (https://diverseeducation.com/article/180494/). Ibram X. Kendi, author of “How to be an Antiracist” and the founder of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University, developed this racial data tracking system that regularly updates racial data on the pandemic. As students of PJHC, we should rigorously interrogate systems of inequality, especially in advocating for the safety of communities in this pandemic.
https://covidtracking.com/race/
A major way you can support the communities most affected by Covid-19 is donating directly to mutual aid funds. Here are a few:
Navajo and Hopi COVID-19 Relief Fund:

The COVID Racial Data Tracker The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t affecting all communities the same way. The COVID Racial Data Dashboard helps us track this inequity by publishing topline racial data compared with state demographic data.
“In a racist society, it is not enough to be non racist. WE must be anti racist.” -Angela Davis
It is not enough to dislike racism, you must decide to be ACTIVELY anti racist. This starts with education and self evaluation, we all hold implicit biases and it is up to you to take ownership of the role you play in either dismantling or propagating racism. Here are a few of our favorite resources that you can use to take a stand and be anti- racist.
“No matter how big a nation is, it is no stronger than its weakest people, and as long as you keep a person down, some part of you has to be down there to hold him down, so it means you cannot soar as you might otherwise.” Marian Anderson (1897-1993)
We Rice PJHC students believe the time to speak out and amplify the voices of oppressed communities is now. Renewed exposure to the countless murders of Black people have reminded us once again that we can not stay silent or neutral in the face of injustice. Currently, justice for individuals such as Breonna Taylor and Elijah McClain has gone unserved. It is up to each one of us to do what we can to demand what is right from law enforcement, the justice department, and each other. Below is information on petitions you can sign, numbers you can call, and actions you can take to fight for Justice in our broken nation.
