With the vision set, Dr. Dalane Bouillion, Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction and Bob Thompson, Executive Director of Secondary Education lead the charge by researching and clarifying virtual education while gaining input from high school principals, students, and the Board of Trustees. All stakeholders agreed that the program should provide learning that is aligned with the district and state standards to ensure the highest quality of education. In October 2007, Regina Owens was hired as SISD Virtual School Administrator. It was her foresight to ensure the program was a global learning community that focused on thinking not technology and ensure students were provided all the support necessary to ensure academic success. The program began serving ninth through twelfth grade students in Spring I.S.D in both core and elective courses. The dedication ceremony was held November 2008 at the Gordon M. Anderson Leadership Center. The first class of students entered in August 2008 with students pursuing the Recommended High School Program and the Distinguished Achievement Program who attended Carl Wunsche, Dekaney, Spring, and Westfield High Schools. With great collaboration among the school administrators the inaugural year was a tremendous success. The program graduated seniors from each comprehensive high school in its first year with the dedication and commitment of master teachers, counselors and staff. Virtual School offered nontraditional opportunity for students contributing to the success of early graduates, students needing extra credit to fulfill graduation requirements and students needing flexibility to meet unique or extenuating circumstances. It is the desire of Spring I.S.D. Leadership to continue to provide an exemplary education to students in a virtual format. More courses are being offered and student enrollment is increasing with the dedication and commitment of the Executive Leadership Team, the Board of Trustees, the Virtual School staff as well as a larger Spring I.S.D. learning community. As a result, our students will continue to experience choice in education and flexible scheduling.
