The Lamar baseball team had some high moments, including a sweep of Memorial in the Region III-6A quarterfinals. The Texans advanced to the regional semifinals for the first time in eight years.

Only two baseball teams from Houston ISD in the current decade have reached the state round of

16. Both are from Lamar.

The Texans matched the 2011 squad with a run to the Region III-6A semifinals, falling 7-5 and 8-3 to an impressive Kingwood squad.

Lamar (31-7-2) nearly rallied from a 7-1 deficit in its final at-bat in game one, getting five consecutive hits down to its final out.

Brendan Cu***ng doubled, Cyrus Twaddle, Alexander Lopez and Sam Frank singled and Drew Woodcox drilled a three-run double to bring the tying run to the plate.

Joe Castillo and Matthew Mackey combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to give the Texans time to rally.

Lamar had another big seventh inning in game two, but trailed 8-0. Frank and Chris Gutierrez led with two hits, while Wood-cox had a two-run triple.

The Texans closed a stellar season that included the District 18-6A championship and playoff series victories against Jersey Village, Katy and Memorial.
