Last week, graduate students from the Urban Planning and Environmental Policy Program embarked on a site visit to Olivewood Cemetery, Houston's inaugural incorporated African American burial ground.
The students are currently engaged in a project aimed at supporting the descendants of Olivewood Inc. in the restoration, enhancement, and revitalization of the cemetery.
Under the guidance of Dr. Mickelson, the students observed tombstones marking the final resting places of individuals who arrived in America as slaves, as well as notable members of the Free Mason organization. Additionally, they noted burial symbols representing the Yoruba and Igbo tribes.
It is evident that Olivewood Cemetery is a repository of history, and through the diligent efforts of the UPEP Tigers, this history will endure for generations to come.
GO TIGERS!
