A good business has plenty of aspects that can shape its success. Last year, Capital IDEA Houston and Harrison Consulting Group (Oklahoma) partnered with national manufacturing and community engagement nonprofit Mechanism to survey various practices and insights that employers utilize to make worker voice a smart business strategy.

With it came a couple of key points that showcases what happens when when workers are heard. By creating a safe workplace culture and building strategies to amplify worker voice, a potential range of new employees can see the benefit of working in a company.

These first three lessons can guide employers on what it takes have a satisfying work experience for every employee.

Some leaders don’t just show us the way forward. They help create the path.

This year, Capital IDEA Houston is proud to establish the Sister Mignonne Pathways to Prosperity Award, a new honor recognizing leaders who bring people together, break down barriers, and create pathways to opportunity, economic security, and shared prosperity.

And there could be no more fitting inaugural recipient than Sister Mignonne herself.

Long before Capital IDEA Houston opened its doors, Sister Mignonne was doing the work of community organizing—listening, building relationships, and helping communities turn their priorities into action. Through that work, she brought people together, built relationships across communities and institutions, and helped chart a path that ultimately led to the establishment of Capital IDEA Houston.

Her philosophy was simple, but powerful:

“You can’t just go in with, ‘Here’s the plan.’ They have to create their own plan.”

That belief in listening, collective action, and helping people chart their own way forward is part of the foundation on which our work was built.

Sixteen years later, we continue that work by helping Houstonians create pathways through education and into careers that can provide greater opportunity and economic security for themselves and their families.

By naming this award in Sister Mignonne’s honor, we celebrate not only what she helped set in motion, but the example she leaves for those who will follow.

Please join us on Saturday, September 19 as we honor Sister Mignonne as the 2026 inaugural recipient of the Sister Mignonne Pathways to Prosperity Award at our16 Years of Thriving Careers Fundraising Gala.
